Chapter four

Harrison

Breanna is standing on my front step. She’s wearing blue again, but her outfit is not as glamorous as it was when I saw her two days ago.

What is she doing at my house? I’m supposed to have someone come interview for a nanny position at ten, and she’s busy stalking me and following me to where I live.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

I can hear Jaxon in the living room behind me, still busily working on the town we’ve been creating with giant legos.

“I’m here to interview for a position, but perhaps the address is wrong? Stacy told me…”

As soon as I hear Stacy’s name, I want to bury my face in my hands. But I don’t, because I’m a professional. I will be talking to Stacy, though. I said I was looking for professionals, and this woman looks like the neighborhood babysitter, not someone who has done this her whole life.

Then, something strikes me as funny, and I can’t keep the smile off my face. I told this woman to get a job to earn money. Here she is, trying to get a job. I just hadn’t meant from me.

“You’re my ten a.m. interview,” I state because the driveway is clearly empty other than her Ford Focus. This is the woman that Stacy promised me would be a perfect match for Jaxon.

I hear a clatter in the living room, and Jaxon runs forward, realizing that something is happening that he isn’t a part of.

“Hi!” Breanna greets Jaxon. He acts like he’s shy, even though he isn’t. He grabs my leg, and peers out at Breanna with interest.

“Come inside,” I finally say, making the decision to at least interview her. Stacy said that she thinks it will be difficult to find someone on such short notice because of the strange hours I work. Surgery days can be long and difficult, and sometimes, I’m on call at the hospital.

“Jaxon, why don’t you show Miss Breanna where your blocks are?” I suggest.

Jaxon trots over to his Legos and watches Breanna come sit on the floor, with her back against the couch.

“Me and Daddy is making a Lego city. But a big robot just came and destroyed it.”

I widen my eyes. “What? A robot came when I answered the door.”

“Yeah, and he was too big for me to stop,” Jaxon says. He stands up and moves his arms mechanically, then stomps on another part of the city we worked hard to create. I smile, then glance at Breanna who is watching him with interest.

I’m not sure if she’s staunchly ignoring me because she feels as awkward as I do or if she’s really interested in Jaxon’s imagination.

“What about if the crazy robot is really good at building and he starts building the city faster than any construction worker ever could?” Breanna suggests.

I watch as Jaxon considers the idea. Then, he nods enthusiastically. “Yeah, like a good robot!” He makes buzzing noises as he hurriedly rebuilds the bank I had spent no less than ten minutes carefully constructing.

Breanna seems to easily fall into playing with Jaxon, and I can’t help but be amazed at what a natural she seems. Then, just as the city has been restored to its former glory, she looks up and catches my eye.

I remember who she is, and I set my face in a serious look. This woman had me close to taking her back to private room two days ago. And to be honest, as I see her now, it’s hard not to be distracted by her bright smile and full breasts. She’s got the curves that turn me on, but I can’t let myself get distracted right now.

“Jaxon, I need to talk to Miss Breanna for a few minutes.”

“No! I want to talk to her!” he pleads, grabbing on to Breanna’s arm like she’s his new best friend. And maybe in his mind, she is.

“I need to ask her some questions to see if she can work here and be your new nanny.”

“‘Cause mean Miss Lisa doesn’t like me anymore?”

I sigh. I tried to explain things to Jaxon as easily as possible. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I had to be honest too. I basically told him that Miss Lisa needed to find another job because she’s not good at being patient with Jaxon when he’s not listening.

I’m sure Jaxon heard some of the hurtful things Lisa said to him over the phone, and that was just when I was listening. Who knows what else she said to him when I wasn’t on the phone?

Breanna looks up at me from the floor, then readjusts so that she’s on the couch and at an even level with me.
