Carter’s brows furrowed in confusion and his eyes were piercing. “What are you doing?”

The deep rasp in his voice caused her stomach to leap while she stumbled over her words.

“I… you finished your water. I brought more. How… how do you feel?” Her eyes softened when they lowered to his shoulder, squinting slightly at the blood tinged bandages.

“Tired. What the hell was in that shit you gave me?” A line etched between his brows while he reached for the medicine bottle, grinding his teeth slightly from the pain that shot through his chest and shoulder from the motion.

“Nothing. What I had left after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. It’s like the over-the-counter stuff, just stronger.”

“No shit.” Carter pushed out a harsh breath before dropping the bottle on the bed at his side.

“I’m going to do some shopping. Do you need anything?”

“Nah, I told you that isn’t happening. I’ll—”

“I know. I’m on house arrest. I’m shopping online. They’ll have it delivered within the hour hopefully. I usually only buy groceries on my days off since I have long shifts and the food spoils. There’s not much here and I don’t know about you but I need to eat.”

The disapproving frown on his face lessened, developing into a teasing grin. “Is that an invitation?”

“No but you’ve made it very clear that I’m stuck with you for the next two days. Regardless of how rude you’ve been, I refuse to be a bad host so I’ll share.”

Carter chuckled lightly. “That’s very diplomatic of you.” He struggled to sit up and the sight almost had McKenna moving to assist but she managed to stay put until his eyes bounced around the room locating the duffle on the floor beside the bed. “Hand me that.”

“My god, do you ever use question marks?”

A thin, almost unnoticeable hint of a smile curled his lips before Carter issued another attempt at gaining access to the bag. “McKenna, will you please hand me that?”

Pointing with his forehead to prevent any unnecessary movement, Carter initiated another try at appeasing McKenna. Her shoulders relaxed some before granting the request, placing the bag on the bed at his side.

Carter fumbled through the items, removing some until locating the money he’d asked Brooks to bring. There were ten stacks but he only removed one and extended it to McKenna.

“Here, use that to buy what you need.”

McKenna lifted her chin defiantly. “I told you; I don’t want or need your money.”

“And I told you that’s bullshit. Take this.” Carter’s chin dipped and he held steady with the position until she gave in and removed the banded bills from his grasp.

“I’m ordering online so I can’t use this, but thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Do you need anything?”

“Nah, I’m straight for now. Most of what I need is in here.”

“Fine.” She turned to leave, stopping at the sound of his voice at her back.

“Kenni?”

Kenni? The way he used her nickname with his smooth honey timbre resonated deep into McKenna’s soul and crawled over her skin. One word, her name, shifted her world unfairly, making McKenna want Carter to hang around for a while.

Crazy thoughts, right?

“Yes?”

“What are you making?”

“Does it matter? You’re not really in any position to be picky.”
