“You don’t have a boyfriend.” His response was delivered matter of factly, breaking the uncomfortable silence hovering between them. A smile eased in place and it quickly transformed, becoming dangerously sexy while his eyes lingered on hers.

“Okay,” she rasped just above a whisper while her body visibly relaxed, which Carter noticed.

He refilled his glass, tossing back the contents before he twisted it between his fingers on the table. “Is that why you’re always nervous around me, Kenni?”

“Huh?”

“You said I hurt people.” Her eyes shot up to his, where she found a strange tension at the corner of his light browns.

“I don’t know that for sure. It’s just my assumption. You have a gun and I’m sure you know how to use it.” She shook her head gently. “I shouldn’t have said it.”

“Assumptions can get you killed but trusting your gut can also save you.”

She nodded but Carter didn’t miss the argument building in her eyes as they reflected a bit of disbelief.

“You’re safe with me, Kenni. I wouldn’t hurt you. Do you believe me?”

“No.”

Carter smirked, tossing his chin. She was lying but he wouldn’t call her on it. At least not just yet.

“Tell me what you do again? Apparently I totally fucked that up.”

“What do you do?”

“A lot of things.” He didn’t hesitate with his response and McKenna rolled her eyes.

“I’m an admin which is a glorified secretary at a hospital. Most days the only thing I handle with patients is making sure their paperwork is filled out right, answering simple questions, sending them to exam rooms, and taking care of their discharge paperwork.”

“Damn, so you don’t even handle patients? You handle their paperwork? Yo’ ass could have killed me.”

She gave him a deadpan look. “The person who shot you could have killed you, but thanks to me they didn’t.”

Carter chuckled. “You’re right. I need to be more appreciative of what you’re doing for me.”

“You said that you do a lot of things. Which one of those things made someone angry enough to shoot at you?”

He leaned back and studied her for a long moment. “I’m not discussing that with you.”

“Why, who could I tell?”

“Nobody if you’re smart.” The warning was clear. But he added, “And I don’t know the answer to tell you anyway.”

“You don’t know who shot you?” Her brows furrowed and he shook his head.

“No, which is why I’m here. I need to figure this out before I show my face again.”

“Then tell me what you know and I’ll help you figure it out.”

Carter grinned at McKenna, amused by the offer. “You’re gonna help me figure out my shit?”

She shrugged. “I can. I’m an unbiased voice. I don’t know you or your team so I can see them in ways you can’t. You personally are overthinking because someone shot you so you’re not seeing this with a clear head. Tell me what you know and let me help.”

“You want to help?”

“Yep.”

“Why?”
