She grinned. “Nope, one and done.”

“You sure?”

“Very.”

Nah, that don’t work for me but I’ll let you think that’s it.

“I assume you’re good at what you do?”

“The best.”

“Then what if someone wanted to make sure there was no more magic? Or maybe someone wants to be the new magician.”

His expression was hard when he glared at McKenna. She had touched on something he hadn’t considered and spoke the words out loud that were now circulating in his head.

“Someone wanted me out of the way so they could be me.”

He had considered the obvious. The people who hired him only wanted a job completed without being attached. There wasn’t a place for loyalty. The transactions were handled discreetly and in ways that protected all parties. Carter was simply the best at his job and had a pristine reputation with no margin of error which meant he got the high dollar clients. Moving him out of the way meant opening the door for more money to those who weren’t as dedicated to the discretion and professionalism that Carter employed.

“Both possibilities,” he stated, feeling annoyed about the reality of what she was saying.

“And then there’s women. Maybe you pissed one of them off.”

He was amused. “You think a woman shot me?”

“Maybe. Whoever shot you didn’t actually kill you. Left shoulder which means they might have intended to and was a terrible shot or they got someone else to do it.”

Carter chuckled. “You really think I would piss off a woman bad enough for her to shoot me?”

McKenna shrugged in a lazy manner and Carter smiled arrogantly. “You just don’t see any good in me, do you?”

This time it was McKenna who smiled. “You haven’t exactly given me a reason to.”

“What have I done to you?” He smirked, allowing his eyes to roam her body. “That you didn’t like?”

“Aside from barging in here at one in the morning, holding me at gunpoint, forcing me to play doctor and housing a fugitive?”

“Brooks held you at gunpoint, not me, and I think I more than made up for all that.”

“You think sex erases why you’re here?”

“No, but it made you less disagreeable to me being here and I gave you money for the inconvenience.”

“The money was a bonus.” Her eyes lowered. “The other part was ehhh…”

Carter threw his head back and laughed. “You’re full of shit and not a good liar but I’ll let you make it.”

“That’s kind of you. I’m going to bed. You should get some rest too,” McKenna said lightly. Her eyes lowered to his bare chest and moved to his shoulder where an adhesive bandage reminded her of why he was in her home. Carter was feeling better but he wasn’t completely healed.

“You worried about me, Kenni?”

“Yes. If you die here, I’ll have to explain that to the cops and that’s not a task I can say I would look forward to enduring.” She turned her body and let her legs drape over the side of the sofa so she could stand. “You need help?”

Carter eyed her intently. “No, I’m good. Get some rest.”

She smiled awkwardly and walked away, pausing at the small entrance that led to the back of the house where the two bedrooms were. “Take the pills. At least one of them. You need the rest.”

“I’m not doing that and I already told you why.”
