“Yeah we. I’m stuck here so whatever you do I’m doing it with you.”

“You said what I usually do and the activities I indulge on my days off are solo.”

“Then that’s the one exception we’re making. What are we doing, Kenni?”

“Eating, sleeping, and binge watching my comfort movies which I’m sure you’ll hate, so you can skip that part.” She stared, expecting him to excuse himself from the plans but instead he added one more amendment.

“Bet. I’m down, but in your bed, that sofa is uncomfortable as shit. I’m not trying to spend my day on it.”

“You sure have a lot of complaints for someone who doesn’t have to be here.”

“And you keep bringing that up like you want me to leave, now let’s go.”

Carter was feeling McKenna. She was smart, slick at the mouth, and her pretend resistance to him kept his dick hard. He didn’t like easy and she was anything but. Spending the day with McKenna easily felt like a perfect way to invest his time.

The afternoon ran smoothly. For lunch they ordered subs and for dinner they ordered pizza. By nine that night McKenna was fast asleep so Carter decided to slip away to check in. Something wasn’t right about the situation and the longer he didn’t have answers the more it nagged at him.

Once he had his phone powered up, several more messages surfaced from Jessup and out of aggravation he decided to listen to the last one. He glanced over his shoulder at McKenna to make sure she was still asleep before he lifted the phone to his ear to check out the message.

The recording was only six seconds long, mostly dead space, but what caught his attention were the voices at the end.

“That him?”

“Yes, but he didn’t answer.”

“You said you could find him.”

“I will, damn. Stop fucking pressing me.”

Carter played the message several more times, getting angrier each time until one voice in particular registered.

Jessup.

He didn’t know the other male.

Thoughts flooded his mind, bringing him back to the same conclusion. Jessup couldn’t be trusted. He was looking for him and promising his location to a man Carter didn’t know. That only meant one thing. Jessup had played a role in why he’d gotten shot.

He thought back to the hours before it happened when he’d called Brooks and asked him to swing through with him. The hit was simple, one Carter felt Brooks could handle, and he’d elected to use it as a teachable moment. Sooner rather than later, Brooks would have to be on his own and Carter would make sure he was well prepared. Jessup hadn’t known Brooks would be there but he had been pressing him pretty hard to get the job done.

“This muthafucker,” Carter mumbled before making a call.

“What’s good, Carter?”

“I need you to put eyes on Jessup.”

“Done, you want to tell me why?”

“Something isn’t right. I need to know who he’s around. Who he’s with now and as soon as you find out, let me know. Stop whatever the fuck you’re doing and move on this. It has to be you. Don’t put anyone else on it.”

“Aight, I’mma hit you back in a few. Let me move some stuff around.”

“Aight.”

Carter ended the call feeling like his world was shifting and things were falling in place. He trusted Brooks. For the past two days, he was the only person who knew where Carter was. If he had played a role in how Carter had ended up there, he had the access to finish the job and no one would be the wiser. There was no connection to McKenna where Carter was concerned. No one would question a damn thing.

He hadn’t considered Jessup an issue. They had no connections and the job he’d accepted was just a paycheck, but that didn’t mean someone else couldn’t finesse. Carter prayed, for his own wellbeing, that there was a good excuse for what he’d heard but his gut was telling him differently.

Dragging his hand over his face, he glanced over his shoulder once more. McKenna was still out cold, and his mood was all fucked up, so he decided it was best to put a little distance between them.
