Carter hit him back.

I’ll call you.

He locked the device and felt McKenna’s eyes on him but she didn’t say anything so he asked,“What’s on your mind, Kenni?”

“Nothing.”

“You sure?”

She smiled and nodded. “I’m sure. It’s late. I’m going to bed. I have to be up by five.”

Her eyes lighted on his with a question she wouldn’t ask.

Are you going to be here when I wake up?

“Yeah you should.”

Again, they stared at each other silently until she stood and stretched. Carter’s eyes dragged over her until she lowered hers to him again.

“You staying up?”

“For a little while.”

She nodded stiffly. “Good night, Carter.”

“Night, McKenna.”

Her heart clenched with the usage of her full name but she didn’t address it. Instead she walked away, entered her room, and softly closed the door. A sadness like she’d never experienced before in her life flooded every inch of her body. Instead of doing anything about it, she climbed in bed, settled beneath her bedding, and exhaled all thoughts of a man she should have never met because their time had expired and she needed to get back to her life.

A few hours after McKenna left him, Carter quietly peeked into her room to make sure she was asleep. He then made his way across the hall, removed his duffle from the dresser, and began collecting his things from around the room.

After he had everything that belonged to him tossed on the bed, he put on a pair of sweats, shoved the rest of what was left back in the bag and carried it out with him, tossing it on the sofa. He stepped outside the front door with his phone in hand and leaned against the side of the house to make his call.

“What’s up?”

“Jessup had a meeting a few hours ago.”

“And?”

“And I just sent you pictures of each person who was there. I caught them as they were leaving.”

“Hold on…”

I lowered my phone and waited for the images to come through. I swiped through the group, laughing under my breath. I wasn’t expecting the faces, but I wasn’t surprised either. One in particular confirmed what I was already thinking. Lono.

“So this is a fucking game to them?”

“Nah, not a game. A precaution. I followed Lono after he left. He and I had a talk.”

“A talk about what?”

“Did you know your father worked with Jessup a long time ago?”

Carter froze. “Why would you ask me that?”

“I didn’t think you knew. Lono was very forthcoming about some things with the hopes of walking away from our conversation. He didn’t by the way, in case you’re wondering. Right after our talk, I put a bullet in his head,” Brooks said arrogantly.

Brooks got the information he needed from Lono by making promises he had no intention of keeping. He’d learned from the best about using whatever means necessary to get what you needed. Seconds after Lono spilled his soul, Brooks spilled Lono’s blood and set his car on fire.
