The way his face grimaced and his body flinched from such a small motion wasn’t missed. However she still rolled her eyes, mumbling under her breath as she prepared to leave the room, stopping just outside the door and glancing over her shoulder. ‘That still wasn’t a question, asshole.”

Before Carter could respond, she was gone which left him shaking his head, laughing under his breath. She was definitely not like the women he was used to. Women who would bend over backwards to do anything to please him, just for the pleasure of being in his company. McKenna wanted anything but him being around which had him curious about who she truly was.

The simple details he knew were surface information. Just enough for him to be aware of the name that belonged to the beautiful face he was staring at. He needed someone who wasn’t associated with his world to be a safe haven until he could move around again.

McKenna returned with the duffle bag just in time to catch Carter pushing his gun beneath the pillow. She ignored the act but took note, tossing the bag on the bed next to him, moving to the nightstand where she aggressively landed a small prescription bottle and a water.

“Here? If you don’t need anything else, I would like to go back to sleep. I’m exhausted.”

“What’s that?” Carter’s eyes shot over to the nightstand.

“Ibuprofen. They’re eight hundred milligrams and should help with the pain. If nothing else, it will help you sleep.”

His brow inched up slowly, a hint of amusement dancing in his honey-hued eyes.

“You’re not a nurse but you’re giving me drugs?”

McKenna snorted, landing a sharp gaze on Carter. “I’m sure you’re well acquainted with drugs. Take them or don’t. I was only trying to help, now if you don’t mind, I would like to get some rest.”

Choosing to ignore her little dig about his acquaintance with drugs, Carter asked a different question.

“What about work?” he questioned, remembering she did have a job even if it wasn’t the one he assumed she had.

“I rotate with three-four shifts.”

Carter stared at her blankly and she further explained, “Twelve-hour days, on four off three and on three off four. I don’t work for the next three days.”

He nodded and she added, “That should be enough time for you to rest then leave my house.”

Once again, Carter stared hard which had McKenna feeling self-conscious. He did it on purpose knowing his presence made her nervous, but he also liked the view. She was still only in a t-shirt and panties, exposing most of her sienna brown skin along with toned thighs and defined calves. She fought hard to seem unbothered by the way his eyes roamed her body but a blush spread across her cheeks.

“Well?” she questioned, angling her head to the side to make sure he was well aware she was annoyed.

“I need one more thing. Can you help me put some clothes on?” Anger contorted the features of her face as she looked down at the towel still around his waist then moved directly to the duffle on the bed. Instead of waiting for an answer, Carter dug through his bag until he found a pair of briefs and shorts. They were new but not expensive because he didn’t spend much time at the apartment he kept which was about ten minutes away from McKenna’s house. He had been hired to take care of a local dealer who frequented her neighborhood so being close was ideal. So was knowing the residents, which was why he’d had the information on McKenna.

“You can’t do it?”

“I probably could but I would appreciate some help.”

“Fine.” She moved to the bed and stood in front of him with her hand extended. He smirked at how bothered she was by the entire process but kept his thoughts to himself.

“You have to stand.”

“Aight.” Carter pushed out a deep breath before he used what little strength he had to stand. When he swayed, slightly losing his balance, she stepped up and caught him, dipping under Carter’s arm to steady his body.

“You might want to hurry.” Carter felt weak from the blood loss and depleting energy levels he was experiencing.

“You think.” She rolled her eyes and looked up, attempting to allow Carter more time. “You good, can I let go?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

She eased away from his side, waiting to see if he was steady before kneeling down with the briefs in her hand and tapping his calf so he could step into them. She slowly worked them up his muscled legs stopping mid-thigh and stepping back.

“You can get it from here.”

“McKenna, just pull them up, damn. It’s not gonna bite you.” Carter looked down, catching the angry expression she offered before dipping her hands under the towel and tugging at the briefs until they were up around his waist and the towel dropped, pooling around his feet. She was, however, extremely careful to keep her hands in a safe place, but that didn’t prevent the intimate visual she was granted.

“See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?” He fell onto the bed, feeling more exhaustion settling in, grabbing a pillow and shoving it under his head.
