Chapter Two

Where was she?

Hallie fiddled with the curve of her hat brim and scanned the police station parking lot again. Corey had said she would be here.

A pair of headlights shone across her, and Hallie shielded her eyes. Corey’s car pulled right up to the curb. Her cousin shoved the driver’s side door open and ran to her. Hallie was already jogging down the steps, and caught her up in a crushing hug on the sidewalk.

“Shit, how did he find you?” Corey asked, holding her back at arm’s length. “I thought you never talked about me to him.”

“I don’t know,” Hallie whispered, shaking her head.

She’d never seen her cousin look this worried—other than the night Hallie had shown up here four months ago, scared.

“Okay, where is your car?” Corey asked.

“It’s parked over there, but I’m afraid he put a tracker in there or something. There was a man at the gas station. He said he would be tracking me using my phone or the car, but I checked my phone. He’s not in there. One of the officers inside even helped me double-check it.”

“You filed a harassment claim?” she asked.

“Y-yes. If something happens to me, I want them to have a good place to start looking.”

“Nothing is going to happen to you. We should’ve come to the police from day one. I told you we should’ve.”

“I thought he wouldn’t find me here. I thought I would be safe.”

Corey sighed and pulled her into a hug. “It’s going to be okay. We’re going to figure this out. What do you want to do with your car?”

“Leave it here.”

“Forever?” Corey asked, her eyebrows drawing down in confusion.

“Just until I can figure out where to take it to have it searched for a tracker.”

“If there is a tracker in there, he will already know where we live.”

Hallie shrugged. “I know. I just don’t feel…”

“Feel what?”

“Safe.”

“I hate him,” Corey gritted out. “Hate his guts.”

She wouldn’t tell Corey what she was thinking now, but she was going to have to leave. Just the thought of it made her want to cry. These last four months with her cousin had been healing in so many ways, but she couldn’t bring Derek’s attention to Corey.

“Let’s go home,” Corey said. “I’ll call a friend of mine in the morning. He’s got a car shop. He might not know anything about trackers, but I bet he could point us in the right direction.”

But just the thought of Corey involving anyone else gave Hallie a sinking feeling in her stomach.

Hallie got into the passenger’s side of Corey’s car and buckled in before she rolled her head back onto the rest behind her. She bit her lip to stop it from trembling. She’d been close to happiness here.

“What did the police say?” Corey asked softly.

“They can’t do anything about the stalking until he does something bad to me.”

“He has done bad to you,” Corey gritted out as she pulled out of the parking lot. “Who was the guy who told you about the tracker? Can he check your car?”

“Oh, I don’t even know his name. He was…” Hallie frowned. “He was shot.”
