“He didn’t do his job yesterday, resulting in us leaving early.”

“And that was totally my fault. I ordered him to let me through, and he had no choice but to let me go.”

He scoffed. “He should have at least tried a little harder.”

“He locked me in the break room and tried to find something to barricade the door from the outside… I think he did well enough.” Killian grabbed my face and sighed as he placed his forehead on mine.

“Brielle.. I’m letting you know right now; the more you defy me, the angrier and more aroused I get. If you do not want me to take you up against this desk, try not to make me feel this way.” I gasped dramatically and whispered.

“Against your desk? You think it’s smart to give Nathan a free show? We should at least charge him.” He rolled his eyes and pulled away, but I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before he could.

“I hate you so much,” he said, shaking his head and trying to hide his smirk. I smiled in response.“I love you, too.”

Biting his lip, he leaned against his desk as he watched me walk towards my office.

“Stop staring at me, Killian.” He chuckled.

“How do you know I’m staring at you?” I stopped walking and rolled my eyes.

“Your head and eyes are directed to where my butt is.”

“Well, my apologies for trying to look at one of the finer things in life.” I turned to him and crossed my arms.

“I have to admit, Mr. Russel.. your choice of wordplay was rather smooth.”

“I always aim to impress you, Ms. Newman.”

“Well, sure, you’ve impressed me.. for now..”

“Be careful with that attitude, Brielle… it could get you in a bit of trouble.” Turning away, I shrugged.

“I never mind a little trouble.” He chuckled darkly. “Pardon me, darling, but I think you may be asking for aspanking?”

I stopped at the door, and my cheeks immediately went red. He was trying to win… and I wasn’t going to let him.. even though I would essentially dig myself into a grave later tonight when I’d most likely meet that trouble, I wouldn’t allow him to win this one. Turning toward him to see his cocky smirk plastered on his face, I tilted my head as my comeback came to mind.

“Well,sir.. I’m no stranger to your rather unique methods to make me comply..” My response sent a look of surprise to his face, and he cleared his throat as he tried to mask it.

“Is that so?” He muttered, and the look in his eyes dared me to reply, and I shrugged. “Tell me when and where. Maybe if I’m feeling good, I’ll listen…” He groaned again and got off of his desk as he went around to his chair. Feeling the victory, I entered my office, but the smile dropped as Nathan stared at me with wide eyes, and he looked very much in shock. Ignoring his stare, I picked up my purse before looking at him again and speaking.

“Walk me outside?”

Chapter fifty-one

Brielle

Walking down the sidewalk, I sighed softly as I gazed upon the busy streets. I was hoping that things would get better with my family when I was younger, as we always had problems, but I can see that it’s going to be hard to mend anything that’s already happened.

I remember feeling very confused as a child when Eugene would show me more love than my own parents would. If anything, at the time, I mostly thought of him as a father figure, though he was only a little older. It pains me to think of him because my conscience is always having this inner battle on whether he’s alive or not.

The part that says he isn’t is my rational side, trying to make me face reality. The other half of me is the optimistic side, which is telling me he’s still alive, and he’s just hiding for some reason. And as stupid as I may sound, I usually side with my optimistic side because the reality is too much for me to take in at times.

I was brought out of my thoughts as I realized we finally reached the coffee shop. Entering, I went over to the counter and ordered as I tried to ignore Nathan, who was, per usual, giving out his signature death stare to others nearby.

I walked to a chair with my food and took a seat. Nathan stood guarding the table like a madman, and I cleared my throat. He directed his attention to me, and I pointed to the chair in front of me and spoke before I took a sip of my tea.

“Sit down.” He reluctantly took a seat, and I smiled as I continued.

“Ms. Newman…” I heard him say after a good five minutes, and I responded.
