Chapter fifty-six

Brielle

“For you and I…. Our mother isn’t exactly our mother.”

For a minute, I felt his words go in one ear and out the other. After a few seconds, I couldn’t exactly remember what he said. Time felt as if it was slowing down, and I watched as he grabbed my arms and shook them. I looked down at his hands, which were now shaking me, but as I looked, I couldn’t help but notice how slow I was going. There was a slight buzz in my mind, though I wasn’t quite sure what it was.

Hearing those words made me feel a weight lifted off my shoulders, as well as the world crashing down on me. I always wanted our parent’s approval, but they always had certain expectations for each of us… and for some reason, I always wondered why I couldn’t live up to my mother’s expectations.

Feeling myself come back to reality, I could hear him speaking to me in a panicked voice, and only then did I feel how rough he was shaking me.

“Brielle, please say something.. Please, you look like you’re about to go into shock.” He said in a panic, and I felt myself laugh slightly, though I couldn’t understand why I did.

“What do you mean?” I asked, and he looked down at my small smile worryingly before looking back up to my eyes.

“You spaced out for a good few minutes and were unresponsive to my words or gestures.”

“Oh…” I responded softly, not knowing how to reply, but I laughed him off. “I’m fine.”

“Bri… I can hear how hard your heart is beating, and the tears on your face are nonstop.” I was crying? Our mother isn’t exactly our mother. His words came to my mind, and I stared blankly at him.

My lip trembled slightly, and my ‘laughter’ soon turned into small sniffles, “I-I’m fine.”

He brushed the hair out of my face, sighing, “Bri…” He whispered softly, and I felt myself struggle to take in a breath. For you and I…. Our mother isn’t exactly our mother.Surely I heard him wrong..

“C-could you r-repeat what you said earlier? Please?” I asked, and he pulled me into a hug. He laid my head on his shoulder, and I didn’t even notice myself wrapping my arms around his neck. I only noticed that I did so when I felt how tight I was hugging him. A minute or so went by, and I whispered.

“What exactly did you say to me?” I pressed, and he didn’t say anything. I don’t know if it was just the rush of emotions going through me, but I felt myself get angrier. I needed to hear him say it.

“What did you say to me?” I asked slightly harsher, and he whispered.

“Cheryl.. isn’t our mother.” And that was all it took for me to start sobbing fully in his arms. He held me against his chest, and I gripped onto his jacket with as much force as I could. I felt him move his head a little, and then he went back to looking down at me. Slowly, I could feel myself trembling, and the comfort he gave me only helped a little.

I felt the vibrations of quick footsteps, and he pulled me closer to him. I couldn’t make out what was going on as I looked up only to see the legs of a man, but my tears made it hard to make out. The voices speaking were loud, but it sounded a lot like mumbling.

“What the hell did you do, Eugene?”

“I told her the truth about our parents, and I think she’s going into shock.”

“What did you tell her about them?”

“That… Cheryl isn’t our mother.”

“Jesus Christ, hand her over to me.”Eugene pulled me closer again, almost protectively, but I still didn’t know why.

“Why-” I felt myself being moved into another person’s arms, and I immediately knew who it was the second I did.

“You obviously have no idea how to make her feel better in this type of situation. She’s about to have a panic attack…”I felt his hand travel to my face, and he caressed it softly. I moved my eyes over to his and blinked once as he continued.

“Brielle, love?” I heard him, and he resumed. “It’s alright, sweetheart.. slow deep breaths for me..” I couldn’t feel anything to give a response. He rubbed my arms slowly, and I gradually took in a deep breath, using the techniques we’d researched together and were advised to use by his personal doctor when I was dealing with Marissa and the appearance of my parents.

“God, it’s like they live in a movie.”I heard Blaine speak, and Killian continued, caressing the side of my face.

“Be quiet, Blaine.” He muttered, and I gave a small smile at his obvious irritation as he gave me his full attention once again.

“Let’s go home love..” He muttered, and I nodded in agreement. He helped me stand up and walked me with him towards the door. Calvin stepped out of the doorway, and there was a look on his face as he stared down at me. I couldn’t distinguish it, but it was clear that he was slightly confused.

Killian wrapped his arm around my waist and gave Calvin one last look before walking me to the elevator. Blaine followed suit, but I noticed that Eugene didn’t. Looking back, I could only hear a little bit as Calvin spoke.
