Chapter twenty-nine

Brielle remained silent as her heart was beating out of her chest. Killian noticed her sudden change in character and stepped a bit closer to her.

“M-Marissa?” Brielle stuttered, and Marissa smiled.

“Brielle.. It’s been so long since we’ve seen each other.” She walked over to Brielle and pulled her in for an unwelcoming hug. Brielle stood still as she felt her blood go cold. She stepped back from Marissa’s embrace, and before she could attempt to say another word, Calvin sauntered over with a smile.

“I see you’ve met my date, Marissa..” He smiled, and Brielle inched closer to Killian, who in return wrapped his arm around her waist comfortingly. Marissa furrowed her eyebrows as she tilted her head.

“I thought I would’ve been the first to know when you got yourself a boyfriend, Bri..I am your big sister, after all.” Killian’s eyes widened, and he snapped his head over to Calvin, who was looking around oblivious as if he hadn’t known what he’d done.

“And you must be Killian… I’ve heard a lot about you. I had to find out about you on my own since Brielle never called or picked up.. ever.” Marissa continued, looking over to Killian, as Brielle could feel her hands growing clammy at the accusation.

“T-that’s not true.. I always called. You changed your number and never contacted me once.” Brielle whispered, tears coming to her eyes as she tried to hold them back.

Marissa gasped. “Me? Change my number? I would never do such a thing..” She replied, feigning innocence as she glanced once again at Killian.

Killian looked away from her and turned to Brielle, who showed him signs she was going to have a panic attack. It was subtle, but he could notice everything about her, from her increasing efforts to breathe normally to her trembling hands to her chest, which looked constricted and in pain. He placed his hands on her face, and he could feel her sweaty palms as she grabbed his wrists.

“Darling, relax for me, alright? Would you like some fresh air?” Killian asked, ignoring the fact that they were being watched. Although Brielle was quick to nod, Calvin stepped in.

“You couldn’t possibly leave now. Dinner is about to be served.. We saved three seats at our table just for you.” He insisted as Blaine walked over, noticing the tension. He looked over to Brielle, who was shaking in Killian’s hold. Killian grabbed her hand and pulled her close as he shook his head.

“We’re fine, Lockwood. We were just leaving.”

Marissa frowned. “Well, you can’t leave now. It’s not every day I see my little sister up close in person.” Blaine’s eyes went wide, and Calvin smirked.

“..We wouldn’t want to cause more of a scene now, would we?” Calvin urged, and Killian surveyed the room, realizing they were drawing attention by standing in the middle of the dance floor. Calvin gestured towards a nearby table, and Killian held Brielle’s hand as he directed her over to have a seat. He wanted to take her outside for a breather, but with the watchful eyes on him, he wanted to be cautious if Calvin had any other schemes or plans.

He placed his hand on her knee, and instead of shaking him off as usual, she grabbed his hand and held it to find comfort. Blaine took his seat, and Marissa directed her attention to him. “Why, hello, Mr. Porter.. how are you this fine evening?”

“Not doing too well,” he admitted, looking away from her, and she frowned. “You were right, Calvin. They are uptight.”

“I know. Just wait until you see Killian angry.” Marissa laughed at Calvin and looked back at Brielle. Killian noticed there was something off about how she was acting. Like she was pretending to be someone she was not.

“So Bri… Last time I heard from you was the day after I gave birth tomychild… You named her Delilah.. cute.” She smiled, and Brielle ripped her hand from Killian and quickly stood up from her chair.

“Excuse me.” She whispered and went straight to the bathroom as Marissa rolled her eyes.

“Now, that wasn’t dramatic at all. How about I go find us a fresh bottle of champagne? Be right back, Cal,” She beamed as she stood and walked over to the bar. Killian and Blaine both directed their attention to Calvin.

“What exactly are you doing here, Lockwood?” Killian seethed, and Calvin shrugged innocently.

“Nothing.” He dragged it out and then broke into a celebratory dance using only his shoulders while still seated.

“You look like a fucking idiot,” Blaine snapped, and Calvin chuckled.

“I’m sure I do.”

“How much do you want to bet Killian won’t jump over this damn table and choke you to death?” Blaine asked, and Killian tilted his head, intrigued as he wanted to hear how much Calvin would bet for something he was willing to do for free.

“I don’t have to bet anything..” Calvin shrugged, and just as Killian was thinking of lunging out of his chair, one of the servers walked over.

“Your white champagne, sir.” He said, placing it on the table.

Killian furrowed his eyebrows. “If he brought over the champagne… then where the hell is Marissa?” Calvin looked around before pouring himself a glass as a knowing smile crossed his lips.

“Beats me.. She could’ve run into Brielle for all I know.” Killian quickly stood from his seat and rushed over to the bathrooms, silently praying the woman hadn’t run into Brielle.
