“He’s a track star Kiki, it’s gonna be quite hard.”I rolled my eyes as I pushed through the crowd of many people.

“Thanks for the words of encouragement.” Once I was free from the crowd, I looked around frantically and caught him crossing the street and running to mine. I went after him again and tried to get as close as possible.

Eventually, I was able to touch his shoulder, but he shook me off and ran twice as fast. I stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and gasped, attempting to catch my breath as I placed my hands on my knees. My chest heaved as it practically felt on fire.

“Dammit, he was too fast.”

I chuckled at Blaine as I pulled out my phone. “Yeah, he’s fast…” Opening the map, I located the tracker that I placed on his shoulder and saw that he was already two or three blocks away.

“But not fast enough.”

Chapter thirty-one

Brielle

Five Years Ago

Stepping into what used to be my parents’ home, I threw my bag onto the counter. I had a long early shift, and as much as Mr. Burkley didn’t want me to stay extra, I had to since I needed the hours, and I couldn’t do without them.

My parents stopped paying the bills of the house the second I turned eighteen, which was last month, and now they’re just piling up. I’ve been thinking of moving to a smaller place and selling this house since it’s obvious they don’t want it anymore, and it gets way too lonely at times.

I took a seat on my crying chair in the living room and contemplated whether I felt like letting go right now. This chair used to be Eugene’s favorite before he left to go overseas. My parents wanted to get rid of it, but I could never let them. I still roam around his room, hoping I would open the door and find him sitting on the bed, reading his favorite book. Sadly, it never happens.

Sometimes, I cry too much, and it gets to the point where my heart feels so heavy, but I don’t have any tears left. Then I remind myself that my parents abandoned me and I shouldn’t cry for them.. but I still do..

Laying my head on the arm of the chair, I sighed as I closed my eyes. It was still early, and I still had a few hours to go before I needed to go to the dance studio to clean and teach. Life couldn’t get any better than this.

Falling off the chair as I yelped in a panic, I was awoken by something abruptly. Landing on my side, I looked around frantically as my mind still wanted me to go back to sleep. I started to doze off after about five seconds, and I brought myself back to reality as I heard a loud noise. Noticing it was my phone, I crawled over to the coffee table with much effort, and eventually, I was able to grab it and answer.

“Hello?” I asked quickly, and I didn’t hear anything for a second. “I’m hanging up now, bye,” I said sleepily, and as I was about to bring the phone down, I heard a voice.

“Brielle.”My eyes shot open.

“M-Marissa?” My heart clenched. It had been exactly seven months since I’d heard from her.

“I’m in the hospital.”She said, and I already felt tears coming to my eyes.

“In the hospital?! Are you okay?” I asked quickly, and I heard her respond as if she was in a hurry.

“Yes, I’m fine. I just need you to come see me.”

“What happened? Do you need anything? Are you sure you’re not hurt? Did something happen-”

“Brielle, I’ll explain when you get here. Just hurry. I’m at Ridgeview Hospital.. shouldn’t be too far from you.”She ended the call, and I scrambled to get up before I ran to grab my purse, coat, and shoes. I walked out the door and ran into town to catch a taxi. It took me a total of twenty minutes to get there, and I was proud of myself for making it this far without breaking down. I rushed into the hospital like a madman and went to the front desk. The woman looked over at me and smiled.

“Hello there, how can I help?”

“I-I’m here to see Marissa Newman. I’m her sister. She just called me and told me she was in the hospital.” The woman nodded her head and went over to her computer. She typed in a few things and nodded again.

“Name?”

“B-Brielle Newman.”

“Ahh, yes, she was expecting you. You’re the first on her list for visitors and emergency contacts.” She asked for my ID, and I hurriedly gave it to her. After checking, she opened a drawer at her desk and pulled out a box full of cards. She handed me a pink card to clip onto my shirt, and I took my coat off and did so with slightly trembling hands. Afterward, she directed me toward where I needed to go.

“You’re gonna take the elevator to the third floor, and there, you’re going to ask to see your sister, Marissa.” I nodded and thanked her quickly as I hurried to the elevator. Pressing the third floor, I sat anxiously waiting for the doors to open. I exited once they did, and I looked around the hospital floor.

Going around the hall, I looked up at the signs and furrowed my eyebrows as this whole floor resembled a maternity ward, and I could hear babies crying in their separate rooms. I slowly looked around and went to the large desk area in the middle of the floor. The woman who sat there looked up at me and smiled.
