"To drive me crazy?"

"Yes."

He kissed me, and I slid off the desk and straightened my clothes as the warning bell rang overhead. "I'll catch you later," I said with a wink, before leaving his classroom and heading to my own.

The day passed painfully slow but at long last the end of the day bell rang and the kids, Hailey included, hurried out of my room. I hadn’t heard from Jake all day and didn’t want to press him. I glanced at the clock for what felt like the hundredth time. This time, as my eyes wandered up to the clock, I glimpsed Jake stepping into my room, his expression unreadable. My stomach clenched with nerves as I waited for him to speak.

"Well?" I asked, unable to hide the desperation in my voice.

Jake's lips quirked into a small smile, and relief flooded through me. "It went better than expected," he said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. "They're not taking any action against me since Valerie refused to show them the messages or report it to the proper authorities."

I let out a shaky breath, feeling like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. "That's great news. You should have texted me! I’ve been so worried," I said, crossing the room to wrap my arms around him in a tight hug.

"Sorry, I wanted to tell you in person," he said, returning the embrace. "It's a relief, for sure."

"Did they say anything else?"

"The petition to remove me as chaperone from the Spring Fling has been overruled."

I laughed. "Order has been restored to the universe."

He shrugged. "Except I still don't know who made the dating profiles in my name. I can't quite help but feel like I'm not out of the woods yet. Whoever did it is still out there..."

I worried my bottom lip thoughtfully mulling over Jake's situation. It was strange that I was grateful to the mischief maker who had forced us together.

"Hey," I ventured, tightening my grip around Jake's reassuringly solid waist. "Don't worry, we'll figure it out."

He grinned. "We? Since when did this become a team effort?"

I slipped out of his touch and folded my arms across my chest in mock offense. "Since we started dating."

"Does that also mean you'll be my date to the Spring Fling?"

"Of course," I said, a shiver of excitement running through me at the thought of spending the night with him, stealing a dance here and there under the twinkling lights.

"Good, because I wasn't sure how I was going to find a date on such short notice."

"You could have always asked Valerie."

He laughed. "Yeah, that would have gone over well. What next? Get arrested for putting my hands on her corsage?"

"You touched her what now?"

"Talk to Mr. Davis in bio department. He’ll tell you about it."

I snickered. "So... are you gonna touch my corsage?"

"Hmm, not your corsage, but other parts, yes," he growled, the corners of his mouth lifting in a way I knew meant he was trying not to laugh. "We better get out of here before we end up in the principal's office for lewd behavior."

"What lewd behavior? You're not even touching me," I said innocently.

"Oh, that can change very easily," he replied, his tone low and suggestive.

"Is that a threat or a promise?"

"You tell me." He closed the gap between us, his body pressing against mine, and then the door opened, Hailey breezing in and we jumped apart like two teens getting caught fooling around on the family couch.

"You two look cozy."
