“Your highness!”

“My what?”

He drops to one knee.

I take a nervous step back. “Uh...”

He reaches behind him, retrieving an object from his back pocket and raising it high over his head. It’s a bell, the sound loud and gong-like despite its small size. Heads swivel throughout the entryway, the line behind me backing away in confusion.

Just like that, men rush the porch, each one clad in blue Alpha Delta Xi T-shirts. Some from inside, others from the lawn behind me. One or two leap down from the second floor via the roof, expertly landing on their feet on the grass. They surround me, falling to their knees and bowing their heads with deep respect as they rest a fist over their hearts.

“What the fuck?” I hear Dylan ask from the door.

“Brothers!” The man in front of me lowers the bell, his voice echoing throughout the silent porch. “I present to you, Dana Darling Kirby,Princess of Delta Xi!”

Dylan’s jaw drops even more.

I stand still, my knees shaking.

“Huh?” I say.

CHAPTER 11

CONNOR

I stare at myself in the mirror, wondering if I should change my shirt again. It’s stick-em night on Greek Row. Need to make a good impression. Dana was right about that part.

The shirt is fine, I decide.

"Well, I’ll be damned.”

I glance through the mirror behind me to spot my father lingering in my open doorway. “What?” I ask.

He steps into the room, eying me with a smile. “A Friday night. A clean outfit. A close shave.” He scoops a football off my floor by my bed and tosses it between his thick hands. “If I’m not mistaken, I believe my son is on his way to his first Delta Xi party.”

I chuckle. “You are correct.”

“Are you driving?”

“Yeah, gonna pick up Alex and Ben in a few minutes,” I say as I adjust my hair. Again. The shirt might be fine, but the hair needs more tweaking…

“You guys are a little late, aren’t you?” Dad asks, checking his watch.

I stand tall, confident. “Well, we didn’t want to seem too eager, you know? Gotta play it cool.”

He grimaces, amused. “Rookie mistake, bud.”

I pause.“It is?”

“There’s no such thing as fashionably late at Delta Xi,” he explains. “You’re either there, or you’re not. I mean, there’s no bad time to show up, but you don’t want to miss out on too much. These are the moments,” he says, echoing what Coach said at the birthday dinner. “Make ‘em count.”

I consider it, the concept obvious now. “I’ll remember that for next time.”

“Now, having said that,” he crosses his arms, “be careful.”

“I will,” I mutter, my focus dipping to my shirt again.

“Connor.”
