He takes his shot, his face barely moving as he swallows. “Why?”

Because I love her.

I missed her.

“Because I love her,” I say aloud, letting my thoughts escape. What else do I have to lose at this point? “I missed her, but I didn’t think you’d want me to see her.”

“So you snuck in through her window?” he asks.

“Yes.”

He bites down, his jawbone pushing against his cheek. “And last week?”

“Last week?”

“My wife tells me you brought her home after the Delta Xi party,” he says. “What happened there?”

Ah, crap.

“She had too much Princess Punch,” I answer.

To my surprise, he chuckles lightly. “That’d do it.”

“I made sure she made it home,” I add. “I didn’t want her to get hurt.”

“You did what I asked you guys to do,” he says. “For that, I’m grateful.”

I nod, hoping he doesn’t dig into anything else about that night.

“But now I find out that you two are running around behind my back?—”

“We’re not?—”

“My daughter is lying to my face,” he says, looking me in the eye. “She’s never done that. Not until now, and I know the mischief you and my sons have gotten into, so I know what you’re capable of talking her into.”

I go quiet. It was my idea for her to lie. Can’t argue with him about that.

“But I understand,” he says. “I know what it’s like to be so much in love with a person, you can’t help but do some stupid shit.”

I nod respectfully to show I’m listening.

John exhales hard through his nose. “Now, I don’t need to know what you and Dana have been up to, or how long you’ve been dating. I don’t care about that.”

“We weren’t dating?—”

“Connor,” he warns.

I shut my mouth. Probably best he thinks so, actually.

“I don’t need to know,” he says again. “What I need to know is that my daughter is safe.”

“I won’t hurt her,” I say. I promise.

“I know that.” He nods. “Luckily for you, you’ve already proven that many times, so I will not make you jump through hoops to gain my trust. You’ve already got that.”

I relax. “Thank you, sir.”

“But Connor…” His face hardens again. “No more lies. You have my trust, but what you don’t have is extra chances. Do you understand?”
