Someone approaches us from behind, quick feet shuffling on the ground.
“Hey, guys...” It’s Grant. He pauses next to Ty in front of me, his grin wide and polite. “I hate to interrupt the very important conversation you’re having for some reason, but the next-of-kin has elected me to come up here and find out what the hell the holdup is.”
“Connor’s gesturing,” Dad says.
Grant raises his brow. “To who?”
“My sons,” John says.
“Here?” Grant asks. “Now?”
“Yes,” Dad, John, and Ty say together in annoyance.
“Oh. Well…” Grant pats my shoulder. “Wrap it up, buddy.”
“I’m trying.” I grimace. “Alex is being stubborn.”
“I’m stubborn?” Alex snaps.
“Yes!”
“Okay. Fine.” Alex throws on a smile. “Connor, you have my blessing.”
“Thank you,” I say.
“Thank god,” Ty says.
Dad and John try to step us forward.
Alex holds us back. “Yeah! Feel free to have as much sex with my sister as you want,” he says, still glaring at me. “Next year, you can bring her up to your room at Delta Xi every night. Should be easy, she’ll be living right across the street. It’ll be just great.”
I sigh at his sarcasm. “Alex, come on.”
“I’m starting to re-think our talk from the other night now, Connor,” John says.
“I’m starting to lose my grip here,” Ty breathes out.
Grant signals the group behind us. “Courtney! Sweetie, come here,” he says, waving her forward.
Courtney walks over. “What?” she asks.
“Slide in for your Uncle Ty, will you?” Grant asks, moving her in front of me.
She awkwardly squeezes in. “Uh, okay…” she says as she takes hold of the handle. She easily hoists it up, letting Ty take a break — and taking some of the load off the rest of us.
“Thank you, honey,” Ty says, rubbing his hand.
“Not really wearing the right shoes for this, though,” she says.
“You look wonderful, by the way,” Grant says to her.
She grins as Mom and Rose approach on either side. “Thanks.”
“What is happening?” Mom asks us with a biting whisper. “Why are we switching out?”
“Connor’s gesturing,” Grant says.
“Here?” she asks. “Now?”
