“Dana Darling Kirby,” he says. “Will you marry me?”
He opens the box. There’s a ring inside. A diamond ring. It’s sparkling. It’s sparkling a lot, actually.
Or maybe I’m just seeing spots.
“Dana,” he says.
“Hm?”
“Breathe.”
I inhale. The spots go away. “Thank you,” I say.
Connor smiles. “Dana, I love you,” he says, barely peeking at his phone as he reads. “I want the rest of our lives together to be just as good as the last four. When I picture my future, my career, my everything… it’s with you. It’s always been with you.” He sets the phone on the floor and takes the ring from the box. I present my left hand and he slides it onto my ring finger. A perfect fit. “Dana, marry me,” he whispers.
I swallow hard, banishing the lump in my throat, but it doesn’t stop the tears from forming on my lashes. His words cut deep, filling my heart with joy. When I picture my future, my career, my everything… it’s with him, too.
“Yes,” I say. “Yes. It’s always been you, too.”
He kisses me softly, careful not to smother me. I cup his face and draw him in, making him laugh as I give him an even deeper kiss.
“I love you so much,” he whispers.
A tear spills down my face. He wipes it away. Always has. Always will.
“I love you,” I say, my breath strong and steady now.
I look into his handsome face. Those gorgeous eyes of green. His mother’s eyes.
I chuckle.
“What?” he asks.
“I wonder who bet we’d get engaged before graduation.”
He laughs, our lips grazing again. “Well, as long as we get married before I earn my first championship ring, my mother will be happy.”
“Mine, too.”
His arms curl around me as he rises and we stand together.
I glance at the trail of candy again and wince. “I totally mucked up your proposal, didn’t I?”
“No,” he says. “This was better.”
“How was it supposed to go?” I ask, curious.
Connor chuckles. “Let me show you.”
He scoops me up into his arms and carries me, following the trail of candy toward the bedroom.
We kiss again, signaling the end of our undergraduate years.
And the start of the rest of our lives together.
