A few moments of awkwardness later, the last person I assumed would walk into the coffee shop does just that.

“Hey, isn't that your brother? Atlis?” I ask him. If his eyes could squint any harder they probably would, and as if hearing his name like a dog heard his owner, Atlis appears at our table.

“Well, looks like Kias found a new toy.” Atlis slides into the chair next to me and leans slightly towards me. “Hello, Zolina. Nice to see you again.”

“You can cut the formal bullshit, Atlis. We’re just getting coffee. No harm in that, now is there?” Kias’s question is thick with double meaning, more than a simple one. I turn my head to look at Atlis’s reaction.

“A harmless coffee? No. As long as we are keeping our straws to ourselves. We don't need anyone getting sick and ending up in the hospital, now do we?”

Clearing my throat, I look back and forth between the two. “Am I missing something? Because if I am, I can leave you two alone to work out your problems.”

“Nope. No problem here… Is there Kias?”

“No. No problem,” he grinds out.

Obviously, there is a problem, but I'm not seeing it. It has to be a family issue– one that I'm not getting into the middle of. “Okay. Anyway…” I trail off, leading the conversation off to something better. Hopefully.

“Yes, anyway. I heard you're having a birthday party in a couple of weeks,” Atlis says to me, turning his entire body towards me and shutting off communication with his brother.

“Yea– Yeah. Why?”

He leans in until his lips are right next to my ear. “Good. I'll be waiting. I can't wait to see what you are going to wear,” he whispers. His breath tickles my ear and I get goosebumps in return. My body has a visceral reaction to him, and I can't seem to figure out why. He stands up and pats me on the head. “See you soon, Zolina.” He looks at his brother, opens his mouth, but then slams it shut. With that, he turns around and walks back out of the shop.

He implied that he would be at my birthday party, but why do I have the feeling I will see him a lot sooner than that?

Chapter 6

Atlis

He knows. He fucking knows that she’s mine. I don’t understand why he does this bullshit. Every woman I’ve ever been with, even just fucking around with, he has tried to lay claim. I don’t know what it is about him, but women go after him even though he is a bitch-boy.

Maybe he likes sloppy seconds, and that’s why he’s always trailing behind me, following me wherever I go. He lays in wait, ready to pounce on what's mine– like a pesky jumping spider. Most people think they’re cute, but I just want to squish them with my shoe.

I will ruin him, tarnish his name, and show Zolina who he really is. He whines about not being anyone's favorite. He uses women like they’re snot rags, yet throws them away when he is finished. He will let anyone suck his dick, the dumb blonde from the coffee shop… What's her name? Ah, who cares. She sucked his dick at the last party we went to, then he came downstairs like nothing ever happened and laid claim to my woman.

He pulled her away from me, led her to a bench, and whispered stupid-sweet things in her ear. He is so fucking stupid. I know Zolina is smarter than that. I can see the pain in her eyes, see the stress building within her body, wanting to be released by whatever means possible.

I will be the one to release that tension. I will take her body to subspace, making her high on endorphins and riding on the edge where pain meets pleasure. I will be the one who makes her come so hard she blacks out, only to come back to consciousness so I can do it again. I crave the release her body will give me.

No one else will touch her. She belongs to me. Before Kias has the opportunity to touch her, I will kill him. Then…

I will make her forget that Kias even exists.

Chapter 7

Zolina

It has only been a couple of weeks or so, but I am falling for Kias. He has been well worth the distraction. I look down at my hand intertwined with his. He squeezes gently, making me turn my attention to his tanned face. He smiles and then focuses back on the scenery.

We are walking down a cobblestone path near the river. Being in the center of the city, it gives easy access to all the residences stationed along the river. The willow trees are waving their leafy strands in the brisk wind, forcing me to pull my sweater tighter to my body.

“It’s a little cold, don’t you think?” Kias asks. “Would you like to join me for a riverside dinner?”

“Sure, where do you want to go? There are a dozen little restaurants within walking distance.”

“Let’s go to the steakhouse,” he points beyond us. “It’s right up there.”

I let Kias direct me to the restaurant that sits on the river's edge with some of the windows at water level. I’ve been here before with my mother prior to her death. Stepping in here again is a hard pill to swallow as memories cloud my head of the times we’d sit in this restaurant and talk for hours. However, it is calming to sit at the tables and watch the riverlife swim next to us. Being the peak of the swan mating season, they flutter all around, trying to find their match.
