“I got carried away. I took too much,” he says, and the heartbreak on his face makes my eyes sting.

Stepping closer, I wrap my arms around his middle and press myself fully against him. He’s stiff and unyielding for several beats, then slowly softens, hugging me back and burying his face in my hair.

“I’m so sorry,” he murmurs, and I shake my head.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” Pulling back, I wait for him to meet my eyes, then give him a small smile. “Well, except for maybe avoiding touching me these last few days.”

“I couldn’t bear it if I hurt you,” he says.

“You haven’t, and you won’t,” I say confidently. “I love you, Jesse.”

“I love you more than my own life,” he replies, then presses his lips to mine.

Relief floods through me, and I lean into the kiss. I had this horrible fear that he was going to punish himself forever and refuse to touch me ever again. Our tongues tangle, and gripping him tightly, I shuffle backward toward the bed, pulling him with me.

When my legs bump against the mattress, I sit and lean back, pulling Jesse down on top of me. He catches his weight on taut arms and pulls back to look at me.

“I want to take you out,” he says.

“Right now?” I ask, my voice edged with impatience as I grip fistfuls of his shirt and attempt to pull him down onto me.

“Tonight,” he says, dipping his head to kiss my neck. “After I make you come so many times, you forget what a dick I’ve been these last few days.”

An orgasm rips through me as he speaks the last word, making me shout with surprise. Jesse’s chuckle echoes in my ears as he presses his lips to my neck, lightly kissing the spot where he bit me last time.

He makes good on his promise, and by the time we’re done, I’m completely wrung out. Jesse pulls me up against my protests, swatting me on the ass as he pushes me toward the closet with a command to put on my sexiest dress.

When I put on a tight, shimmery halter-style dress and pick out a pair of heels, A spark of excitement reinvigorates me. I’m going out on the town with my love. We’re getting out of this house and away from the constant strain of the whole situation. The impending war between the witches and vampires. The king’s inability to recover. All of it.

For just a few hours, we’ll escape reality and just enjoy our time together.

When I exit the bathroom after pinning my hair up and applying some smoky-eyed makeup, I find Jesse in the middle of the room looking sexy as fuck in all black. He’s wearing a slick suit with a matching shirt and tie, the only spot of color a handkerchief in his breast pocket the same shade of red as my dress.

“You look amazing,” he says as his gaze roves over my body.

“You’re not too shabby, yourself,” I shoot back with a smirk after swallowing the saliva pooling in my mouth. “Where are we going, anyway?”

“It’s a surprise,” he says, smiling brightly when I narrow my eyes at him.

“Good thing I love surprises,” I say, relaxing my face and returning his smile.

“Are you ready?” he asks, crooking out an elbow.

“I am,” I say, slipping my hand around his arm to grip his hard bicep.

We stop by Steph and Bernadette’s room to let them know we’re going out, and the older witch assures us they’ll be fine in their room with the wards she’s put up. Steph gushes over how amazing we look, then tells us to have fun with an exaggerated eyebrow waggle.

We head out in a sleek SUV with dark-tinted windows, and Jesse steers onto the freeway toward downtown Los Angeles. My heart thumps with excitement, but I manage to refrain from begging him to spill the beans on where we’re going.

He navigates the busy city streets with ease, then pulls up to the curb in front of a high-rise building. A young man in a valet’s uniform rushes out to open my door, and surprise rockets through me when I take his hand. It’s cool to the touch, just like Jesse’s. He flashes me a wide smile as I climb down from the vehicle, then eyes the spot where I’m sure my pulse is fluttering beneath my skin.

Jesse walks around the hood, and the vampire’s eyes widen as he snatches his hand away from mine and takes a step back. Jesse’s face remains impassive, but I can sense his humor as he hands over his keys and the valet mumbles a greeting before scrambling around the car to hop in behind the wheel.

Taking my hand, Jesse leads me into the building. I realize it’s a hotel as I gaze around the interior. The lobby is filled with an inordinate amount of beautiful people, and every one of them falls still and looks our way as we walk toward the elevator.

Jesse squeezes my hand, but doesn’t speak as we wait for the doors to slide open. Once we’re inside and he presses the button to take us to the top, he turns to me.

“This is a vampire-owned hotel that caters to our kind. There’s an exclusive club on the top floor, which is where we’re headed.”
