My gaze flashes to Jesse, but he only smiles and gives me a small nod. I keep forgetting that he’s king now, which, in turn, makes me his queen. I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that.

Meredith moves closer and sits beside me on the mattress. Her intoxicating scent is almost my undoing, but Jesse’s nearness manages to keep me calm enough to remain in control of my actions. Meredith tilts her head, exposing the throbbing vein in her neck. My hunger intensifies, and my head jerks forward, intent on sating that hunger.

I catch myself just in time, though, stopping just short of my target. Be gentle, I repeat to myself a few times before slowly pressing my mouth to her throat.

“That’s good, Eden. Now, bite.”

Jesse’s praise and instruction fills my head with thoughts of his mouth on my own neck. His bite and the ecstasy it brings. My core clenches, but I force myself to focus on the task at hand. I bite down, and my teeth pierce Meredith’s skin much more easily than I’d expected. Then her blood rushes into my mouth, and all rational thought deserts me.

I swallow greedily, and the pain in my stomach vanishes. I suck in another mouthful, and Meredith groans in pleasure.

Oh, yeah. I know that feeling, sister.

Her body tenses, and she shouts, making me jerk my mouth away from her neck violently. I watch her with wide eyes, fearful I’ve hurt her. Her cheeks are flushed, and she’s panting for breath as her body twitches.

“Lick the wound, Eden,” Jesse says, and I look back at her neck to see blood dripping down to stain the collar of her shirt.

“Shit,” I murmur, then lean over to do as he instructed.

Her flesh knits back together before my very eyes, mystifying me even though I know this is how it works. Meredith takes a few deep breaths, then stands without meeting my gaze.

“Are you okay? Did I hurt you?” I ask.

She shakes her head without looking at me, then nods at Jesse before heading toward the door. He holds up a finger, motioning for me to give him a minute before following her out into the hallway.

“I’m sorry, Meredith,” I hear him say as if he’s still standing right beside me. “She didn’t realize what she was doing.”

“It’s fine, really,” she says. “I was just startled, is all.”

“Thank you for understanding.”

“Of course, your highness. Let me know when you need me again.”

I hear her footsteps fade away as Jesse comes back into the room and closes the door. Distress fills me as I push to my feet, my hands wringing before me.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt her, Jesse. I swear, I thought I was being gentle.”

“Eden,” he says, hurrying forward to take my hands in his, “you did great. Meredith wasn’t hurt. Far from it.”

“But…she darted out of here. And I heard you apologize to her for me.”

“Not because she was hurt. She was…embarrassed.”

“I don’t understand.”

He heaves a sigh and pulls me into his embrace, hugging me tightly while bringing his mouth to my ear. “You made her come, Eden.”

I stiffen in his arms before trying to pull away, but he only holds me tighter as his hand rubs up and down my back.

“She understands it was an accident. Were you thinking of me while you fed? Of how it feels when I bite you?”

I nod against his chest, then murmur, “I couldn’t help it. I thought that only happened if we bite someone during sex.”

“Usually, that is the case,” he says, kissing the top of my head.

I tilt my head back to look up at him. “Will I be able to feed without making the donor come? Oh, my God. This is so embarrassing.”

“It could be your witch side, some inherent magic that projects your thoughts. Or, you could’ve inherited some of my power when I changed you. I’m not sure, yet. But we’ll figure it out, Eden. I promise. And if we don’t, then you’ll just have some very happy donors fighting over which one gets to feed you.”
