Why the fuck these two are such good buddies, I don’t know. Or should I say were. We all know both would shoot the other without even blinking if it came down to it.

“The mafioso wants a sample of the coke,” Forger goes on. “Thought it might be a good time to meet, get acquainted with the deadliest family in Houston, never know when you may need allies.”

“Truest words ever spoken, also won’t hurt for them to see how things are done around here.”

Forger chuckles. “You know they used to run this town?”

“Right. But that was then, this is now. Shit’s changed. They have no power here, not anymore.”

Forger just stares back blankly then, abruptly, he stands. Jett, Priest, and I all reach for our guns at the same time, and Forger smirks, his men doing the same. My hands still beneath my cut, and Big Papa turns and laughs.

“Told you they were good.”

Forger shakes his head. “Let’s not get into a pissin’ contest. We need to get out of here.”

“You got any money on the fight?”

Motherfucker has everything rigged. Of course he does.

He grins. “Of course. You know the house always wins.”

Twenty minutes later, we’re inside a van, moving to an undisclosed location.

This feeling I get, it ain’t good. The only thing that makes me realize that we’re not in peril is the fact that Big Papa is needed and heavily guarded. It’s our one saving grace.

All the while, I have an undetectable earpiece with Cash talking to me. They’re following us. It almost feels too good to be true. Getting Forger away from the fight so we can kill him without the watchful eyes and ears all around us.

But nothing is ever that simple. Either Forger got way too cocky, or he’s onto us.

If he is, then we’reall ready, but then again, so is he. They all are.

His need for power and control has him dealing with all sides. This isn’t going to end well. We already know that, but involving the Italians, it’s not something that we bargained for. It’s gonna make things harder. To kill Forger in front of them will pose a problem, but I tend to think that Cash must have another plan up his sleeve.

So the most likely scenario is that we wait for the meeting to be over, then follow Forger and kill him then. There is no way that he’s getting away this time.

I feel the tension mounting, and I’m trying not to sweat. Nothing looks guiltier than a sudden rush of perspiration.

As we head down toward the docks, I can smell the sea.

Every now and again, Big Papa flicks his eyes over to us, and I have to ask myself whether he is truly on our side. The fact that I may never see my girl again tightens in my chest. Could this really be it? I haven’t even had a chance to get to know her yet. There are so many things that I want to know…

I shake myself out of my reverie. No good can come from that. I’ll see her again.

Even though I know that if something happens to me, I never told her what I really wanted to say. I didn’t tell her, but she’s the greatest thing that has happened to me in a very long time. That it’s crazy, but I’m falling for her. She’s all I think about when I wake up, all I dream about when we’re apart. And I never took myself for a goddamn romantic, but here we are.

If I get out of this mess, I’m gonna show her exactly what I want. She’ll never have to wonder about my feelings, or if she’s important to me, because she’ll know.

I don’t know what love is. But I think it comes close to how I feel about Aspyn. Which again, is crazy, as I barely know anything about this chick, but I know how I feel. And I’m rarely ever wrong.

My brother was probably thinking the same thing about his ol’ lady, Summer. But maybe she had a heads up about what was really going on tonight.

It’s not like I can tell Aspyn all about club business when she’s not my ol’ lady. Not yet, anyway.

When we park, we climb out cautiously, and two black, unmarked cars are waiting.

Forger moves ahead with his men, and we tail behind. I take this as a good sign that we’re not in the firing line.

Never turn your back, no matter what.
