“Looks as if they’re headin’ off to Causeway Road, leads to the river.”
“What else is there?”
He clicks away. “Close to Jefferson Park. There’s a marine repair place… Lots of open space.”
He frowns, and I notice. “What?”
“Signal dropped out.”
“Wait,” Rodeo calls from the back as I make the turn onto Causeway Road, “Look! That’s the car, I’m sure of it.”
I turn and see a dark sedan turning toward the south ahead of us.
Adrenaline rushes through my veins as Jett answers Linc’s call. “Think we’ve got them,” Jett says through the speaker.
“South on Causeway?”
“Just lost GPS tracking, but the prospect saw the car. Followin’ ’em now.”
“Roger.”
Jett dials Cash and gives him the details. The club’s on their way.
“Gonna have to call it in,” Cash says. “Can’t be dealin’ with any more murders after last night.”
I shake my head. “Not possible.”
“Listen to me, I’m not gonna see you in a concrete cell, Rock. We’ve worked too hard to get this far. She’ll be goin’ to jail for a very long time, plus, it’ll give us favor with that goddamn asshole Callaghan. We throw him a bone, and he’ll throw one our way.”
Jett snorts. “You really believe that? The man is by the book.”
“Unless it’s self-defense, we need her alive.”
I’m pissed. More than pissed. Cash can’t ask that of me, and what about her accomplice? I don’t mention that. The less Cash knows, the better.
“We also need Aspyn alive,” I say, my agitation showing. “I’m not gonna say I’ll hold back if she’s hurt, Cash. You can’t ask that.”
“Sit tight.” He hangs up.
Fuck him.
Fuck everyone.
I don’t give a shit about my life. All I care about is her.
About my mystery girl and if I’m ever gonna see her again.
We temporarily lose the car, and I panic, only to see it again on the far south side.
“Losin’ ’em,” Rodeo says from the back.
“Goin’ as fast as I can without killin’ us,” I mutter.
“Cash said we need her alive,” Jett says as I glance at him.
“So?”
“So? The motherfuckin’ driver is fair game.”
