I glance at him. “You can laugh if you want to, I am pretty funny.”

He does and I grin too.

“Lisa’s Jezebel hole, oh, I’m saving that for poker night.”

“You have a poker night?”

“Me and the girls do. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I hang out with them more than the guys. The men in this club can be a little overbearing and, truth be told, boring as bat shit. But the chicks in the club are cool and they don’t make demands about what they want to eat.”

“The guys make demands?”

“Oh, you have no idea. I once went on strike, but it lasted all of an hour. Cash made them apologize, and from then on, we’ve been cool. I’m not here to be anyone’s slave. Start as you mean to go on, that’s what my grandma taught me. She’s the only one in my family I had anything to do with after I left.”

“I’m sorry. Your family must be a bunch of idiots if they don’t want you in their life,” I say.

He grins, and before I can say anything more, the door bursts open and three girls come running in.

They stand there like schoolgirls as I take them in.

Must be Jas, Luna, and Deanna.

“Ladies,” Manny says, a little smirk in his tone. “Nice of you to finally join us.”

“Aspyn?” the fuller-figured one says. She’s pretty with shoulder-length chestnut hair and big eyes. “Oh my god, Hi! I’m Luna. This is Jas, and that’s Deanna.”

Jas is tiny with thick-rimmed glasses and a skirt suit. She looks like a lawyer. Deanna has ripped jeans on and a tank, her long, dark hair flowing down her back.

None of these chicks look like Gemma Teller, nor do they fit the idea I had in my head.

“Pleased to meet you,” I say, greeting the other girls.

“So, how does it feel to be out of the house?” Deanna asks. She’s the braver one, I note, moving to come stand next to me.

“My house, or that house?”

“That house.” She smiles.

I shrug. “It’s good. I was just telling Manny I have a lot of regrets.”

“Let’s just leave the pecking for another time,” Manny chastises. “The woman is trying to eat.”

It’s okay, I mouth.

Jas sizes me up. “I thought you’d be taller,” she says. “You're such a slight little thing.” She can’t talk, I’m taller than she is.

“I get that a lot,” I admit.

“Don’t worry,” Luna goes on, rushing at me. “All your secrets are safe with us. Nothing you say leaves this room…but we may have to tell Summer. She’s trustworthy.”

“Who’s Summer?”

“Jett’s ol’ lady,” Jas clarifies. “She’s a big fan, too.”

I gulp. I had no idea they’d even know who I was.

I roll my lips. “Okay, thanks for…”

“But there is a party on Friday night,” Jas pipes up. “For Crystal's birthday. That’s Ryder, the VP’s, ol’ lady. We’re having a few drinks to celebrate, you should come.”
