“Do you have a physical description other than taller than you? That’s not much to go with.”

“Dark hair. Gray-blue eyes. Scars all over his body.”

“Scars you say?” Betty said sharply. “What happened to him?”

“Accident. See, that’s what happens when he gets away. He gets into trouble. We wouldn’t want him to . . . You know. Bring trouble to your nice little town.”

I swallowed hard, but the lump of fear wouldn’t go down. He couldn’t mean Gravor. Or maybe he did. If so . . .

Burn scars on the man’s body. Looking for someone who looked eerily like Gravor. Heck, who sounded like Gravor.

I began to suspect Gravor hadn’t eliminated all the guys living in that commune.

“If your . . . brother is that much of a problem, you should call the sheriff,” Betty said.

“We’d rather handle this on our own. Family sticks together, you know?”

“So do we here in Trickster Falls.” Through a gap on the shelf, I watched as Betty lifted her chin, her shoulders tightening. “If you think you can take matters into your own hands and involve anyone in this town, you’re wrong.”

“If you see him, call me.” The man held out a scrap of paper. “No matter what time, day or night. I’ll come for him.” He turned away from the counter and started toward the door but looked back at her over his shoulder. “Don’t be thinking you can hide him. We’ll find and take him, and no one’s going to stand in our way.”

As he passed where I remained hidden, he stopped. His gaze stabbed in my direction, and with my heart thundering in my throat, I slunk to the side, behind a row of boxes.

The door jingled as he left.

A long paused followed before Betty strode over to stand at the head of my aisle. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”

I straightened and sucked in a deep breath. It jerked back out of me. “No, why would I?” I kept my voice light and breezy.

“Just sayin’.”

“I worked the last three days. I see a lot of guys with scars. Tall guys with blue-gray eyes too.”

Betty nodded, but her gaze never left mine.

“I need a few more things,” I said, and she nodded.

It didn’t take me long to find what I needed.

Betty refused to take payment for them, and I stuffed them into the bag, determined to bake her cookies or weed her flower beds to make up the cost.

“Watch out there, Mazie, and I mean it,” she said, her gaze snagging mine. “And if you run into trouble . . .”

Like Kuunik had?

“You know where I am,” she finished. “Where we all are. We’re here for you no matter what.”

“Thank you,” I said.

Her attention shot to the bag full of men’s clothing, plus the new items that could give me away. “I . . . recommend you stay inside for a while unless you need to work. There’s no telling what guys like that one,” her hand flicked toward the door, “might do.”

“You’re right. I appreciate the suggestion and the help.”

I rushed out to my SUV on shaky legs and climbed inside. I sat with my hands trembling on the wheel, before pulling my phone from my pocket and sending a message to Zara.

Hey, hate to bother you on your honeymoon, but I have some news. I’ve found Gravor. He’s safe with me.

Damn, I hoped he was safe with me.
