Asher appeared oblivious to the exchange, but Mazie was staring at Virginia with wide eyes. “Wolves?” she whispered.

“I swear I saw dragon fire above the forest about a week ago,” I said.

“Whoa.” Her smile widened as she turned back to Mazie. “I just love dragons, and I can tell you do too.”

Mazie glanced my way. “I do. Very much.”

Viginia eased toward the ice cream shop door. “I’m sure I’ll see you around, Gravor.”

“You will.” I was going to make sure of that.

“You wouldn’t happen to have a brother, now would you?” Virginia asked, her hand on the door.

“A twin. Kuunik.”

Her nose scrunched. “Damn. He’s with Zara, and I’d never step into that. You wouldn’t happen to have cousins, would you?”

“Not that I’m aware of,” I said. “Sorry.”

“Oh, well. I do enjoy howling at the moon every now and then, and someone out there must feel the same way.”

“I hope you meet them,” I said.

She went inside, and we continued eating our ice cream.

A car pulled up to the curb across from us, and I lazily watched to see who got out. The sun shone down from that direction, and I couldn’t see well enough to tell who it was, though only one person sat in the vehicle. They didn’t get out, but there wasn’t anything unusual about that. Maybe they were on their phone.

“Can I try yours?” Asher asked, holding his dripping cone out to me. “You can try mine.”

“Sure.” I tilted mine toward him, and we both licked, laughing after.

“Chocolate’s good,” he said, wiggling in his seat. I stroked his hair so like my own and shot Mazie a look of adoration. I adored my family, and there was nothing better than spending time with them.

Mazie’s phone chimed with a message, and she scrolled into it. Her brow narrowed, and she sucked in a breath. When she dropped her cone on the ground and grabbed onto Asher, rising to thrust him behind her, I growled.

Leaping to my feet, I placed myself in front of them, but I couldn’t find a threat.

“What is it?” I bit out, my gaze drawn again to the car across the street.

“Look.” She handed me her phone, her shrill voice stabbing right through my heart.

The car peeled out onto the road, nearly hitting another vehicle coming up behind it, but I ignored all that.

My breath caught in my lungs, and I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to suck in air again.

I stared down at the message, realizing I hadn’t killed every one of them.

Sweet kid, they’d texted. Maybe I won’t need to recapture you after all.

Chapter 23

Mazie

“We’ve got to get out of here,” Gravor said, handing me my phone that I shoved into my pocket. He gave me a quick hug before lifting Asher. “We’re together, no matter what.”

He raced down the street with me by his side. We turned the corner and hurried to my SUV parked in a spot in the lot behind Main Street.

“In,” he barked, opening the back and gently placing Asher inside, buckling him.
