Maybe he had razed the commune to the ground, but if he was involved, it sounded like they’d deserved it.

I was a nurse. Do no harm was pretty much tattooed on my forehead. But after seeing the scars covering his body and the crushed spirit reflected in his eyes, I wanted to go back in time and burn the place down myself.

He moved closer to me, an enormous beast, and pressed his forehead against my belly, huffing out a long sigh.

I wasn’t sure what to do with my hands, but I stroked his cheeks, and he made a muffled sound that came out like laughter.

Mate. Complete satisfaction came through in the word, and it sparked something deep inside me.

How could he speak in my mind?

Backing up a step, he nudged my side with his nose, urging me around to his shoulder. When he dropped flat on the ground and looked at me, I realized he wanted me to climb onto his back. He’d held me with his forearms before, but riding on his back might feel more secure.

I still couldn’t believe I was not only interacting with a dragon, but that I was about to fly with him for the second time tonight.

“Can you understand me?” I whispered, and he nodded. “You may not know the layout of the town, but can you take us to the northwestern edge and put us down near the forest? That’s not far from my home.”

He nodded, his solemn gaze meeting mine. I saw Gravor there—and a wildness that called to everything inside me.

I didn’t have to return to work for five more days. I’d pick Asher up from my mother’s place tomorrow, and I’d have to figure out what I was going to do about that before I introduced them.

I could tell Asher that Gravor was a friend who needed a place to stay. As for Gravor, he’d have no reason to suspect Asher was his child.

Kuunik and Zara would be home in a week.

In between then, I’d do what I could to help Gravor.

Chapter 4

Gravor

Ifelt like Mazie was the lifeline to everything wonderful, as if being near her could make things normal once more.

My dragon insisted she was our fated mate, and I agreed.

I’d had a life before I was taken, a brother I adored more than almost anyone. But according to her, we’d met before. Why couldn’t I remember her?

My past was murky, as if I looked through muddy water but couldn’t quite see the other side.

I suspected things would get clear; they already had. I could swear not long ago I saw my brother, that I’d helped him, though I couldn’t bring the memory to mind like I wanted.

After I burned the commune to the ground, I flew hard and fast until I dropped. Finding a cave, I crawled inside and slept. I didn’t emerge other than to dive into the crystal-clear lakes or hunt. My body needed rest, and I left it to my dragon to decide when it was safe again for me to emerge.

I hadn’t until I caught the lovely scene of this woman. Instantly, I knew she was mine, and I was going to claim her as soon as I could do so without scaring her to death.

“Here goes nothing,” she whispered, using my front leg as a stair to climb. She gripped one of my neck spikes and swung her leg up and across my spine, settling where my neck and back met. “There’s no handle.” A touch of panic came through in her voice. “Well, other than these spikes on your neck. I’ll hold on to one of those?” She huffed. “I’ve got to figure this out on my own. You’re a dragon now, not Gravor.”

I’m always Gravor.

She tapped her temple. “I could swear you’re speaking to me in my head. I must be out of my mind to be thinking that.”

I’m here.

It was a struggle to form words in my dragon’s mind and send them to her, but it made my chest ache to hear fear in her voice.

“All right. You’re with me.” Her giddy laugh rang out. “I can’t believe I’m talking to a dragon in my mind.”

Me. Gravor.
