“Yes, you’re here! Come in, come in.” He stood back and gestured to them. “My new best friend and girlfriend, eh?”

Myra eased into the two-story, brightly lit foyer. It was too quiet. No bodyguards inside? No buddies hanging out? No staff answering the door, cleaning, or cooking?

Ike stayed right by her side, his hand sliding around to cup her waist. The pressure felt incredible, and she found herself melting against him. They were on a job, as a couple. It was a murky line to be professional yet still appear into each other.

She imagined millions of Beau-lievers the world over would swoon over Beau, the famous, handsome, and wealthy athlete. Not her. She’d take Ike’s hand on her waist a million times over Beau’s.

Myra wasn’t afraid of Beau physically. He was an elite athlete, but she doubted he could fight like she could. She simply didn’t know how to respond to a man who was a master at charming women and who she was supposed to pretend to like in public. She didn’t want things to be awkward on this job, but in her mind they already were.

Ike released her to slide his sunglasses into his shirt pocket and extend his hand. “Ike Porter.”

Beau shook his hand. “Beau Alexander. It’s great to meet you. Thanks for being here.” He turned to Myra and his smile widened. “And the female bodyguard. My new girlfriend, eh?”

Ike’s arm went back around her waist, and he pulled her in tight. Beau didn’t seem to notice.

“Myra Tueller. What do they call you? Warrior Woman.” He smirked. “Can you really fight like Black Widow, or are you just a gorgeous face and enticing body to distract all the men while your boyfriend does the dirty work and takes them out?”

Myra’s chest tightened, and Ike growled low in his throat.

Beau was unfazed. His gaze trailed down to her shoes and back up. It wasn’t leering, more like a little boy checking out his new puppy. “You’re going to protect me from the Star Stabber in those heels and that skirt? That’s so tight! I’d like to see it. Can you show me?”

Ike released her waist and stepped forward. Beau Alexander was about to get thrashed by his own bodyguards.

Beau stepped back and to the side, at least smart enough to sense the danger. Luckily for him, he was quick on his feet.

“Sweetie pie,” Myra drawled, grabbing Ike’s arm and tugging on him. “This famous football guy doesn’t think I can fight.” She fluttered her eyelashes at Ike.

Beau laughed, holding up his hands and keeping both eyes fixed on Ike. “I didn’t mean any offense. I know she’s your girlfriend, but the female bodyguard angle is fascinating and really hot. Agreed?”

Ike’s glower showed he didn’t like that any better. Myra eased closer to him and whispered in his ear, “Let me take him down.”

His arm was tight under her hand.

“I need to show him he can’t mess with me.”

Ike studied her for a few beats. She gave him a challenging look, and he arched an eyebrow. She liked when he did that, but right now she couldn’t show any weakness, with either of them.

Finally, he nodded, stepped back, and folded his arms across his chest. It looked like he was restraining himself to let her fight. She’d have to prove to him she could hold her own, just as she had on every other job she’d ever been on. At least he was giving her the chance.

Right now, she was going to teach the too-flirtatious superstar a lesson. If Beau didn’t like it, he could fire them.

“You’re fascinated with how I can fight?” Myra asked Beau.

“Yes, ma’am. I think it’s crazy sexy.”

Ike growled and stepped forward.

“Ike,” Myra warned, holding up a hand. Would he listen to her? She needed to prove to Beau and to Ike that she could handle herself.

Ike backed up to the door, his body so tight as he clamped his arms across his chest that every muscle in his arms and shoulders were popping. He didn’t like it, but at least he was listening.

Myra stepped in close to the football star. Beau’s smile grew.

She sucker-punched the famous quarterback low in the gut. He wheezed out a breath and bent forward. She gave him a swift uppercut to the jaw that had him flinging back. Sweeping his feet out from under him, she cringed when his back slammed into the marble floor.

This job might be over before it began. She wouldn’t get to spend more time with Ike, and she wouldn’t get the bonus to help her family out. Both were huge regrets, but now was not the time to show anything but decisiveness.

Pressing the point of her heel into Beau’s wheezing chest, she smiled down at him. “Still fascinated?”
