She nodded. “We’ll have to go over the film since last night, talk to the FBI, and get Tippin working on it. I can’t believe the Star Stabber could get past security since we increased it.”

Ike didn’t say it, but either a security guy was helping the Star Stabber or maybe was the Star Stabber. How else would a note get past multiple levels of security and onto Beau’s mirror? He shouldn’t have let down his guard last night. He was distracted. It wasn’t Myra’s fault. It was all on him.

“We have some work to do,” Ike said. Work he could do.

“Wait a minute.” Beau held up a hand. “How long’s this work going to take? We have to be at Newport Harbor High at three.”

Ike looked to Myra. “We can’t send him alone.”

“I’m concerned about trusting his security after this,” Myra said.

“What?” Beau shook his head. “My security guys are the best.”

“Beau.” Myra turned to him. “If the Star Stabber got through all of your security people, sensors, cameras on every floor, locked doors on the outside entrances with keyless codes that nobody but your security and us know, do you still think your security is the best?”

“Yes. No way would my guys hurt me. They’ve been with me for years. They have my back.” Beau looked insistent and protective of his guys.

Ike supposed it could be someone else who had access to the house, but how would they get around security and the cameras?

“The three of us are sticking together,” Ike decided. “We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

“All right.” Beau cheered, instantly happy again. “At least I’ve got you two on my team.”

Myra shook her head. “Beau, you are such a mystery. You have friends and women everywhere, but you act like you’re lonely. Then the comment about if Bermuda doesn’t want you …”

“It’s fine.” Beau’s gaze shuttered and he didn’t look ‘fine’. “During the season I have my teammates, but my closest friends have wives and even kiddos. Our friendships have adapted and I’m the best adopted uncle ever. Just life, right?”

They both nodded.

“And then the Bermuda thing.” He shook his head. “I’m not like hurting myself depressed but life has lost its sparkle since she left. I don’t want to date or be with anybody but her. What does that mean?”

Ike splayed his hands. Myra gave them both a look that said men were slow or something. “It means you love her,” Myra exclaimed.

Beau’s eyes lit up, and he straightened. “You’re right. Do you think I can convince her of that and she’ll come back?”

“Oh, Beau.” Myra studied him with a narrowed gaze. “Can you actually be committed to somebody? No cheating. No other women. Loyal like you are to your teammates.”

“Of course I can. Why would I ever cheat on Bermuda?”

“Do you even realize the reputation you have?” Myra asked.

Ike watched this interaction and had no intention of contributing. Unless Myra needed his support.

“Well … yeah.” Beau shifted his weight and folded his arms across his chest. “But you realize eighty percent of that is embellished by the women for more attention or the media for more clicks and higher ratings?”

“You’ve never tried to counteract any of it,” Myra pointed out.

“True.” He nodded. “I let the attention go to my head in college and blew through women. When I went pro, my agent liked the image of the superstar playboy. It brought in more attention, got me more sponsors. Most women seemed to like the challenge of trying to conquer me. Until Bermuda.”

“So you’re serious? If Bermuda loves you back, you’ll be loyal and committed to her? Buy a diamond ring, ask her daddy for her hand, cry when she walks down the aisle of the church looking like an angel in her wedding dress, want her happiness above your own, never look twice at some other woman trying to get you to cheat?”

Myra glanced quickly at Ike, and he felt like he’d been sucker punched. He realized everything she described, he really wanted. With her.

“If Bermuda loves me, I’d do all of that willingly, and more. Anything she wanted.”

Ike’s brows rose. Beau had asked last night if they were professionals and would keep his depression and rejection to themselves. Ike didn’t think anyone would believe this conversation if he or Myra ever tried to share it.

“We have to figure out how to get you back together,” Myra said, determined now.
