As we stepped out of the building—my building—Brian was waiting for us at the curb. A sense of relief washed over me, knowing that we were finally safe from whatever threat that mysterious man posed. But I couldn’t help but wonder who he was and what his intentions were.

Once Brian pulled away from the curb, I pulled out my cell and called Davian. “Davian. There was a man at the auction who was bidding against me. I need to know who he is.”

“I’ll see if Patton can pull the footage from the auction and get a good shot of this guy,” Davian replied. “Is there a reason you are so interested in this man?”

“He knew who I was, but even more disturbing, he knew my father.”

When I slipped my cell back inside my coat pocket, Harper’s questioning eyes were on mine. “Do you mind telling me what is going on?”

I didn’t know what to tell her. That my father was a crook just like the man said or that he was murdered because he double crossed the Mexican cartels.

Instead of telling her anything, I pulled her close and kissed the top of her head and played dumb. “That’s what I’m going to find out.”

As we made our way back to the house, my mind was still reeling from the encounter with the threatening man at the auction. His words echoed in my head and sent shivers down my spine. I couldn’t shake off the feeling of uneasiness that consumed me. I kept replaying his face over and over in my mind, trying to place where I had seen him before. Was he one of my father’s associates? A stranger who just happened to cross paths with us?

Despite all of this, Harper’s growling stomach reminded me that we hadn’t eaten since breakfast. But instead of joining her in the kitchen, I headed straight to my study, needing a moment to collect my thoughts. Pouring myself a drink, I downed it quickly before pouring another. As I stood by the window, looking out at the vast expanse of land that belonged to me, something caught my eye. The driver’s door of the Land Rover was wide open. Brian wouldn’t have left it like that.

My gut clenched as I followed the direction of my gaze to see six men dressed in black making their way toward the house. I placed my glass on my desk and moved to leave the room, determined to find Harper and make sure she was safe. But before I could even reach for the doorknob, Brian burst into the room.

“You need to get out of here and take Harper with you,” he said urgently.

My heart dropped to my stomach as panic rose within me. “Where is Davian?” I asked, fear gripping me.

“Fifteen minutes away,” Brian growled. “You need to leave now!”

Without another word, I turned and rushed out of the room, praying that we would make it out in time before Davian arrived. Niles was making his move. He knew exactly what he was doing. It was just like him to wait until our guard was down. He wasn’t going to get to me or Harper. I would make sure of it.
