“Such as?”

“Well…the bouncer who broke into our meeting room at the club, for one thing,” Lianna says. “And, of course, the initiate we brought in last night.”

Dread settles over me, coiling in my gut. I try to school my expression, but I can’t—not when I know exactly who they’re talking about.

“You’re a fucking whore,” my father mutters. “Just like your mother.”

“Shut the fuck up,” I snap, my throat tight, but I’m jolted back to reality when Irving suddenly grabs my wrist. My eyes dart over to him, and I’m sure he can see the terror.

He looks…happy.

Satisfied.

And all of a sudden it’s clear that this isn’t just about omegas. They plan to get us all under their control.

Animals, not people.

God, I was such a fucking idiot.

“I could take her off your hands,” Irving says, his grip bruising. “What an asset…could prove useful for our efforts to take back Solstice Bay from the rebels.”

My dad’s hand is on my shoulder just as quickly, just as painful. For a moment, I worry that they’ll tear me in two before either one lets go. “She belongs to me by rights,” my father says. “She stays. But this…it’s proof of concept.”

“What are you going to do with me?” I whisper.

Lianna leans forward on the table, her lips curled in a smirk. “No more nighttime wandering, Aisling,” she says. “No more of your little machinations…because I finally convinced your father to send you down to the Pit.”

“But the ceremony—“

“Things are going to change in New Eden soon,” Irving says. “It will grow…thrive, thanks to what you can do.”

He picks up a briefcase from beside him, putting it on the table and tapping it with two fingers.

“I’ve got a new formula with me today,” he says. “And you and your friend get to be our first two test subjects.”

Chapter seventeen

Luka

They let me fall asleep before they make it clear that my little rescue plan didn’t quite go as planned.

It was stupid, of course. I let my intuition guide me into a dangerous situation, eager to get the hell off this island, and they caught me.

It was only a matter of time.

Maybe they’ve known since I got here.

I barely hear a thing before I’m suddenly hauled out of my bunk by two big guys and tossed to the floor. A foot collides with my ribs in the dark, a whole pack of shadowy figures looming over me. Another hit comes to my spine and I arch in pain, trying to get up with a snarl.

I’m pushed down again, beaten.

At some point, I pass out. I don’t know how long it takes.

When I wake up, I’m in a brightly lit, sterile room. I jerk up to a seat, but immediately find that I’m half-naked and bound tight to an examination chair—my wrists to the arms, my chest with a leather strap, my ankles and legs too. I’m almost entirely immobilized, my heart thudding.

I need to trust in whatever forces brought me here…I know that.

But my trust in my intuition fades every day.
