‘It was . . . well, it had been building for a while. And we both agreed to get it over and done with so we could move on,’ Paige replied.

‘Jesus.’ Sophie groaned.

‘How romantic,’ Mya said with more than a little sarcasm.

‘That’s not right,’ Polly said shaking her head.

‘It was hot and a great time was had by all, I made sure of it,’ Paige said.

‘I’m sure you did.’ Mya grinned briefly. ‘But I, that is to say we, thought Melanie was more than that.’

Paige said nothing. Mya hadn’t even been in the country as this was developing; they’d clearly been discussing this behind her back.

‘Yeah, I have to say I thought you two were going to be more serious than a one-night thing,’ Polly added.

‘I feel weirdly sad about this,’ Sophie said as everyone nodded, and Paige looked at them all in shock.

‘We’re not angry with you,’ Mya added, ‘just very disappointed.’

‘What’s happening here?’ Paige asked.

‘Well, we were shipping you two and . . . you blew it,’ Sophie said.

‘I did not. It was hot as hell.’

‘Nobody is doubting that, we just assumed this was the start of a relationship. So now what, you’re just friends?’ Sophie asked.

‘Well that’s just it. How do I know I want Melanie? Is it real, or is it because she can fix me?’ Paige said.

‘You don’t know that she did fix you,’ Sophie pointed out. ‘It could just be coincidental. Your bigger issue is whether or not she’ll have you anyway.’

‘I . . . Well . . .’ Paige couldn’t speak.

Mya wrapped her arm around Paige’s shoulders. ‘Bang again and see if you’re fully healed.’

‘I can’t do that to her. I’m not using her like I would paracetamol,’ Paige all but shouted.

Mya grinned. ‘So you do want her then. Shame that you fucked it up really, isn’t it?’

‘I haven’t . . . have I? How do I . . . ? What do I do now?’

‘We’re going to have to come up with a woo plan,’ Sophie said. ‘Hang on, I need a notebook for this.’

‘I can’t do that. She has too much on her plate as it is. She’s going to have some sort of burnout soon. But then I suppose I could . . .’ Paige started. ‘Although I was thinking, I have access to her to-do list so I could help clear off some of the things on there. That might help.’

‘You mean for the art stuff, right?’ Polly clarified.

Paige slowly shook her head. ‘No, for everything. The bar, the childcare, all of it. I . . .’ Paige hesitated. She might as well let it all out now anyway. ‘I don’t think she knows she gave me access to all of it.’

The silence in the room had its own heartbeat.

‘You don’t think or you know?’ Mya asked.

Paige shrugged. ‘I was going to talk to her about it but we’ve just been too busy and I didn’t want to add more for her to deal with.’ Paige’s voice ended on a whisper.

‘That was weak, Paige,’ Mya said.

Paige nodded. It was. But Paige had loved having the insight into Melanie’s life. She didn’t go on unless it was to update, but she would be lying if she said she hadn’t looked at the other lists on there. And if she was going to be really super honest, then she was looking to see if that one action had been removed. The “DO NOT SLEEP WITH PAIGE IT’S NOT WORTH IT” action. But no that was still there.
