Paige

‘Cheers,’ Mya shouted out, a glass of prosecco raised in the air, as Polly, Sophie and Paige all shouted out too.

‘Hang on, let’s do that again but this time I’ll film it to loop,’ Sophie said, as they all groaned, but then immediately raised their glasses. This was life with Sophie; they were all Instagram girlfriends and knew what was expected, even if they did sometimes take the piss.

It took several shots before Sophie was happy. Then she disappeared to one of the Instagram walls and did a quick filming there. Paige rolled her eyes because they were trying to be subtle. They were supposed to be helping Melanie out without her realising it.

Sophie came back and sat down. ‘Right, I’ve tagged you all in.’

Mya and Polly took out their phones and began tapping away. Paige didn’t need to, her social media presence practically invisible. She wasn’t an internet sensation like her friends.

Paige looked around, and there. Those two. They would be coming over for a selfie with Sophie in three . . . two . . . one . . . Paige watched carefully as they both nudged each other and decided to go for it.

‘Hi, we’re really sorry to interrupt but we’re huge fans. Is there any chance of getting a selfie with you?’

Paige smiled, happy her mojo was returning. Happy wasn’t the word. She was borderline ecstatic. If she only knew why it had gone and why it was now returning, she would feel a hell of a lot better though. She couldn’t shift the feeling it was something to do with Melanie.

Selfie taken, Sophie shouted out, ‘Don’t forget to tag me and Lulu, OK?’

‘Of course, thanks, Sophie. And Mya, can I get a quick photo with you to show my boyfriend? He will freak out!’

Mya grinned. ‘Of course.’

In true Mya style she pushed her arms into her sides making her boobs more prominent as she blew a kiss.

‘Thank you.’

And both women walked away back to their table.

‘She’s not showing that to her boyfriend. In fact, I think you may have given her some straight confusion,’ Paige whispered.

But then Melanie appeared and frankly whatever Mya was going to say or did say, was lost on Paige. All her focus was on the woman stood next to her. She immediately wanted to hustle Melanie back to her apartment.

‘Hey guys, thanks for coming. Do you know what you’d like to eat?’

‘Hi, I’m Mya.’ Mya stood and offered her hand.

Melanie took it, her jaw dropping. ‘My God, you’re gorgeous.’

‘Thanks,’ Mya said with a grin. ‘Right back at you. I can see why Paige fancies you.’

Paige gritted her teeth. Mya was beautiful, there was no doubt, and she radiated confidence and yes Paige had seen first-hand people stop in their tracks when faced with Mya’s full-on attention. And her lack of filter almost always made Paige smile; they were really similar in that respect. But this might well be the first time it had been used against her. She felt awkward. Who says fancy anyway? They weren’t at school.

‘Oh well. Erm. Lovely to meet you. Do you want to order, or shall I give you a few more minutes?’ Melanie asked, her cheeks red.

‘I think we’re ready,’ Polly said.

Orders were taken, and Paige watched as Melanie smiled, and dazzled her friends.

‘Are you all right? Did everything turn up OK?’ Paige asked.

‘So far so good, but as it’s the weekend we’re not going to know for sure until early next week. But we’re good for now. Right, I’ll go and get your order placed.’

Paige waited until Melanie was far enough away. ‘Mya!’ she whispered angrily.

Mya shrugged her shoulders and tossed back her hair. ‘What? I’m just trying to help. She needs to know you still like her, that she wasn’t a one-night thing.’

Sophie and Polly both nodded.
