Melanie grabbed her glasses first, wanting to watch as a dishevelled and completely naked Paige got out of bed. It wasn’t disappointing. Until she started getting dressed.

‘Keep looking at me like that and I can guarantee you will be late for work.’ Paige pulled on a T-shirt and shorts, before turning around with a grin, opening the door and presumably heading to the bathroom.

Melanie was grateful; she needed a minute to reground herself. There was something more than a little bit lovely about waking up with Paige. Something that if she could, she would love to get used to. And that right there, was why she needed a minute. She was getting very carried away with herself. It really couldn’t be more. Not right now and she didn’t need to go through all of the reasons again. She had them recited by heart. But yet here she was in Paige’s bed. So . . .

Ripping off the duvet as if it were a plaster, Melanie got out of bed and searched around for clothes. She found a hoody and some shorts and took one step out of the bedroom, before jumping out of her skin.

‘Good morning, dear. I trust you had a lovely night.’

‘Connie’s back home, by the way,’ Paige shouted from behind and somewhere nearer the kitchen.

Melanie didn’t really know what to do, where to look, or what to say. ‘Morning.’ That was the very best she could come up with.

‘And was your night good?’ Connie asked eyebrows jumping up and down.

‘Erm yes.’

‘Excellent. That means Paige will be in a good mood today. Come on, don’t be shy. She’s going to make us both bacon butties, just what we need after an energetic night. I hope you don’t mind but I folded up your skirt and pants? They’re just over there on the arm of the sofa.’

The normalcy was what was throwing Melanie. They could be talking about the weather. The fact was, Melanie was mortified that she’d left her skirt and knickers scattered across the flat for Paige’s gran to find.

But neither of them seemed to care in the slightest.

Melanie chuckled, her brain deciding to find the whole thing hilarious.

‘That’s better,’ Connie said with a pat on her arm. ‘I’ll go make you a cup of coffee, you sit down.’

Melanie sat herself down and a minute later a cup appeared in front of her, along with a quick hand placed on top of hers, and a lovely warm smile. The smell and sound of the bacon cooking was incredible, and before long a bacon buttie was placed in front of her, just as she liked it. Crispy bacon, on toast and with ketchup. Perfection.

Paige sat down beside her and Connie opposite.

‘So, what’s the plan for today, my loves? Do I need to make myself scarce again?’ Connie asked.

‘You would if it was up to me, Gran but no. Melanie and I both need to work today.’

‘Shame,’ Connie said.

Wait, what? Did that mean Paige wanted more? She’d hinted at that last night, but Melanie hadn’t been certain Paige’s cheesy lines had been sincere. They needed to talk. This was unclear. It was just that Melanie didn’t know quite what she wanted to say or how she was going to say it, or quite what she wanted. She concentrated on her food, ignoring as best she could all the wonderful and scary thoughts going around her brain. But all too soon, her bacon buttie was finished and she was none the wiser.

‘You go jump in the shower and I’ll pull you some clothes together for work,’ Paige said. ‘Go on. Use whatever you like in there.’

Melanie did as instructed, grateful to Paige for the direction. Stepping in the shower Melanie deliberately chose the scent Paige used. It was a terrible mistake. Melanie was basically Pavlovian to the smell and every time she caught it her body responded. Stepping out of the shower tightly wrapped up in a towel, she saw her black skirt from last night, her black heels, her bra, a T-shirt of Paige’s that was black, and a fresh, as in brand-new fresh, pair of knickers, a new toothbrush and bobbles and grips of various sizes.

Oh, Melanie had questions, so many questions.

Once dressed, and teeth clean, she re-emerged to find Paige dressed, and cleaning up the kitchen.

‘Hey, I’ll walk down to yours with you if that’s OK? Here, I’ve made you a latte.’

Melanie smiled. When had she last been so well taken care of? She couldn’t speak as she strode towards Paige and reached out for the coffee, in its own insulated travel mug. ‘You look gorgeous,’ Paige said, placing a kiss on her cheek.

Melanie felt like Alice in Wonderland. Whatever world she had woken up in, it wasn’t hers, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to leave it.

‘Come on,’ Paige said moving towards the back door.

‘Bye, love. See you soon,’ Connie called out.

‘Bye, Connie.’
