And Paige couldn’t talk, well she could but she found she couldn’t open her mouth. She was suddenly afraid that a declaration of love might fall out. But then she remembered why she was there, and realised Gran was right again. And now Paige was getting wound up.

‘Yes, just wanted to let you know that the scaffolding will be put up today. Should be ready for Selena and co. to get started tomorrow.’

‘Thanks, Paige. Yeah, I thought I saw a notification on the app. Are you sure you’re OK?’

‘Yeah. See you later.’ Paige nodded once and took off.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Melanie

‘Right, ladies, I know you’re all eager, so let’s get you lot done before I get too busy and then too tired. Paige, will you get me a Tom Collins please?’

‘Here you go.’ Paige offered Connie the drink the same moment she asked, and Melanie smiled, they were so in sync.

‘I should . . .’ Melanie said as she realised what was about to happen.

‘Nonsense,’ Connie said. ‘Sit down, come on now.’

At a table at the back of the bar, with absolutely no fuss but a small amount of quiet, Sophie popped open the prosecco and made sure everyone had a glass, as Connie sat down at the head of the table and gestured first for Sophie.

‘I’m not doing the whole kit and caboodle for you guys. Just give me your hand.’ Connie looked down and inspected Sophie’s hand.

‘Yep, there’s the ambition. It shows me you still have a lot you want to achieve professionally, and you will. Whatever you set out to do, you’re going to get done one way or another. There’s another bit here that says watch out for your friends. It’s not in a bad way, more a reminder to check in on one another.’ Connie closed her eyes for a second, before opening them and studying Sophie’s face. ‘Personally whatever big thing you’re pondering, the decision you’re discussing . . .’ Melanie grinned behind Connie as Sophie tried to contain her gasp. ‘The decision will be made soon, but the outcome while glorious will not happen the way you initially expect. But your planning and resourcefulness will come into its own.’

‘Wait, but what do you mean?’

Connie smiled and held onto Sophie’s hands with both of hers as she leaned forward. ‘It will happen, Sophie. I see a few more people in your family yet, and when the time comes you will understand. Persevere and it will all be worth it. I think maybe twins and then one more.’

Sophie grinned, her eyes welling up.

‘You already knew the answer, Sophie,’ Connie said with a nod that made Paige roll her eyes at the same time as a tear rolled down Sophie’s face. ‘It’ll be tricky at times but get to it.’

Sophie reached over and kissed Connie on the cheek. ‘Thanks, Connie.’

‘Right, Polly, come here ,my love. Let’s hope we don’t see me running off with your man hey?’ Connie laughed and Polly smiled but if Melanie had to guess it looked a little forced.

‘Let’s have a look at you,’ Connie began as she did the same thing again with Polly’s hand. Polly could barely sit still.

‘Oh well then. No Bailey for me.’ Then Connie laughed. ‘My, you really keep each other on your toes, don’t you? He adores you to the moon and back. With that in mind I see a lot of travel for you two and something rather spontaneous that will tie you both together forever.’ She bent down further and appeared to really study a line on Polly’s hand that had them all trying to lean forward to see what Connie was finding so fascinating.

‘Hmm OK. There’s something quite big with one of your songs. You’re reluctant to believe it will pan out, but I strongly suspect it will.’ Melanie watched as Polly’s face flushed pink. ‘Same here as well though for you, you’re going to be moving about a fair bit in the future, but your girls are going to be as important as always, and you’ll need to look out for one another as you always have done. In fact, I don’t see that bond you all have weakening anytime in the future but it will grow stronger and stronger as long as you all continue to nurture it. You’ll love each other always. It’s quite a thing actually,’ Connie said her eyes bright and her smile full. Polly was returning the look.

She gave Connie a quick hug and then went around and hugged all of them in turn, even Melanie who wasn’t expecting to be included.

‘Right, Mya, get over here.’

Mya grinned at Connie, and Melanie felt like she was looking at two kindred spirits.

‘Don’t worry, Connie, I know my future.’

‘You do?’

‘Yep, world domination and lots of sex.’ She tossed her hair and blew Connie a kiss.

‘I’m sure you’re right, isn’t that what I said last time?’ Connie laughed. ‘Let’s have a look then.’

Mya held her hand out with nothing but confidence and a small smile.
