‘Cool.’ Paige didn’t miss how Melanie quickly looked their way in interest.

‘Right, I’m done. See you later.’ Melanie hastily put away the paint equipment, but before she could make her getaway Mya had run towards her, the scaffolding squealing and shaking. She pulled Melanie into a hug.

‘None of it was for any reason other than we liked you. We thought you were one of us, a friend. And we still are if you want us to be.’ Mya kissed her on the cheek and Paige watched as Melanie turned and walked away.

As soon as she was out of hearing she turned to Mya. ‘What was that?’

‘What? I like her. I don’t need to be dragged down by your bad decisions. Besides, if she’s talking to the rest of us, it’ll make it really hard for her to ignore you. It’s a group charm offensive.’

‘Yeah because your operation ambush is going so well,’ Paige drawled, the sarcasm clear to all.

‘Are you opening up like we discussed?’ Sophie asked.

‘She’s not talking to me! It’s like baring my soul to a brick wall,’ Paige snapped.

‘Do you even want to win her back, Paige?’ Mya asked, in a way that suggested she was really at the end of her patience.

‘Yes, of course.’

‘You need to communicate!’ Sophie cried.

‘I’m trying but is there not something else I could be doing instead?’

‘Would it hurt to try a little charm?’ Mya said, focused back on the painting.

‘I’m rubbish at that too.’

‘I know.’ Mya sighed and placed her hand on Paige’s arm. ‘Maybe you should write to her instead?’

‘Oh, I know!’ Sophie cried out. ‘I’ve got it. You need to get the app, write your own lists and invite her to see it. Why the hell did we not think of this sooner?’

‘I’m not sure that’s a great idea,’ Paige said. ‘Besides I need your advice on something. So Alf invited me to his birthday party on Saturday. Can I still go? Would that be weird? I don’t want to let him down and I’ve really missed him.’

Mya and Sophie looked at each other and shrugged. ‘I’ve absolutely no idea of etiquette there.’

‘I’d suggest checking with Melanie,’ Sophie said.

‘Unless you go undercover,’ Mya suggested. ‘You know like Mickey Mouse or something?’

‘I’d rather do the app,’ Paige said.

‘I can totally see Paige rocking up as Goofy,’ Mya said as she and Sophie burst out laughing.

‘Nah, with that blonde hair and the cold attitude, she’s an Elsa for sure,’ Sophie said.

‘Apart from the operation ambush, have you actually tried to speak to her?’ Mya asked.

‘No, I was trying to respect her wishes,’ Paige said softly.

‘Right, well, here’s your chance. You are respecting her wishes but you also don’t want to let the little guy down. So go ask,’ Sophie said pointing with her paint brush.

‘What, right now?’

‘Yes!’ Sophie shouted, nearly covering them all in paint.

‘Yeah, OK yes. I can do this,’ Paige said, the uncertainty clear. ‘I’ll be right back.’

‘You better had. We need details,’ Mya shouted as Paige all but legged it off the scaffolding.
