“Likewise,” I say to them. “Hey, you free tonight?”

“What did you have in mind,” she asks, turning her eyes down almost shyly, something she’s never been with me before.

“Dinner upstairs.” I keep it cryptic, for Alexander’s sake. Emma and Jennifer don’t need to know that I’m having dinner with the city’s new hockey stud.

“Mmm, you may want to ask if that’s a good idea,” she says carefully. “Let me know.”

“Okay, I’ll do that. Talk to you later, Willa.”

“Bye, Mr. March,” she sings as I walk away.

What the fuck was that about?

“Have you seen Willa?” It’s the first thing I say after hello when I get to Alexander’s later in the day.

“Yeah, she was here last night,” he says.

“What for?”

“We watched a movie,” he says, shifting in his seat to turn his body from me. He’s being cagey, only confirming that I’ve missed something.

“What happened?”

“Nothing,” he answers too quickly.

“Don’t fucking lie to me.” I sit on the other side of the sofa from him. “If you’re not going to have a real conversation, I can go pry one out of her.”

“Fucking hell.” He leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees and dropping his head into his hands. “We fell asleep on the couch, and I got handsy during the night.”

“Handsy how?” He’d never hurt her intentionally, I know this, so I keep my temper in check. Besides, he looks beat up about it all.

“We woke up with one of my hands on her tit and one playing with her waistband.”

“Did you apologize?”

“Of course, I fucking did, and she seemed okay. Except when we really woke up, she ran out of here like her ass was on fire.”

“I’m going to go see if she’s home,” I say, standing back up.

“Maybe I should go,” he argues. “I don’t want her to feel weird about it.”

“You going to tell her how you feel about her?” I’ve hinted at this so many times. He always brushes it off, and I expect no less now.

“No. It’s not productive. I can’t offer her the life she needs. And where does that put you?”

Maybe exactly where I want to be.

“Maybe you don’t know what she needs,” I say instead. “Maybe instead of making up scenarios in your head, we could have actual conversations about this.”

“Why are you so concerned about this,” Alexander asks, stepping into my personal space. One of the qualities I like most about him is how quickly he shifts. From casual to heated in the blink of an eye. I think it’s the hockey in his blood. A moment ago, he was focused on his issue with Willa, and now, he’s stalking me like I’m his next meal.

“I like her,” I say, backing up against the wall. Not retreating, only positioning myself where I know he wants me. Alexander is frustrated and needs a bit of control. For him, I’ll give what I’ve never given anyone else.

“How much?” His palm stretches over my throat, running around it to the back of my skull so he can pull at my nape. Dragging his nose along the column, he breathes me in, then nips my jaw.

“Maybe not as much as you do. Yet.” It’s a taunt, and we both know it. He takes the bait, anyway.

“She’s my coach’s daughter. Willa isn’t for us.” He yanks my hair harder.
