“True. With any luck, Callie will be here within two weeks.”

“Do you have a plan for that, Big Guy,” Willa asks, coming into the kitchen, wearing one of Damian’s tees and a big yawn. “Teenage girls like space, their own rooms, a bed.”

“If I get her and my mom doesn’t come along, I’ll take the couch until I can figure something else out.” My options are limited. The lease I signed on the condo is for a year, I’m stuck with it regardless. But Willa’s right, I’ll have to find a larger apartment either for me and my sister, or my mother and Callie.

“Coffee,” Damian offers Willa.

“Yes, please.” She steps past me, but I grab her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“Did you sleep okay?”

“Mhm, you two make great pillows.” She bends down and kisses me. “Good morning.”

“Morning.”

Damian places a fresh mug on the table, before he, too, gets a hello kiss from her. She doesn’t take her own seat, opting instead to let me pull her into my lap. Her hair still smells of the shampoo he used to wash her with last night. She smells like him. I like that.

A lot.

“I’m making avocado toast and a potato spinach hash,” Damian says.

“With bacon,” I ask.

“No. If you want to keep fucking like last night, we’re taking Willa’s advice and going plant-based.”

“This is your fault,” I whisper in her ear and tickle her side, making her squirm.

“I didn’t know he’d run with it,” she says, laughing. “We were just having conversation.”

“About sex drives?”

“About diet,” she argues, still wiggling on my lap.

“Stop that, I need to make it to morning skate soon.”

“See, the plant-based diet is already working,” Damian teases.

“Fuck that,” I groan. “It’s all Willa.”

“Ah, thanks, big guy.”

“What do you have planned for your birthday,” I ask her.

“What? When’s your birthday?”

“In a few weeks,” she answers him. “No plans yet, but the family will probably want a dinner. So, I guess you should both prepare for that.”

“All three of us,” I ask. “With Coach?” She nods, and my relaxed, happy mood changes into something a lot more like fear.

“Does this look okay?”

“Since when are you self-conscious,” Kit asks from her spot lounging on my bed, as I stare at myself in the mirror checking every angle. It’s a new dress that covers everything, but it is short. Not bowling outfit short, but close. Snug in all the right places in a metallic teal and fuchsia floral print that keeps it cute but still elevated. Zan told me to dress up.

“Since I have places to go that require more than yoga pants and oversized hoodies, I guess.”
