“I’ll be back in an hour,” he promises, already heading for the door.

“If anyone else turns into a bear, I’m out. I mean it.” There’s a laugh from the end of the bar. “No more fights,” I warn.

“You’ll be fine,” he calls over his shoulder.

And then he’s gone.

Taking out my frustrations on the punching bag during the morning training session, my mood is dark. My wolf is pissed. I still can’t get through to Belle. Her phone is going straight to voicemail and it’s making me nervous.

Lucia is too suspicious to bring me in on her plans, and everyone who was loyal to Toby hates me. They’re not going to give me any information.

What the fuck am I doing here?

I’m going home.

This is a waste of my time.

That’s a lie. I’m not going home. I’m going to find my mate and I’m going to haul her out of whatever trouble she’s getting herself into. Whether Marcus wants to or not, he’s going to tell me exactly where she is, and he’s going to help me get her back.

All the wolves here, even the ones who normally make smart comments and give me shit, are staying away. They know not to mess with me today. Left alone, I’m enjoying my workout in peace, with everybody giving me a wide berth.

All except one.

“Not sleeping well? That’s normal when you’re not with your pack. I can give you something to help.” The official pack doctor appears at my side, standing out like a sore thumb in a brand new, dazzlingly clean pair of trainers and work out gear that might as well still have the tags on.

“What can I do for you, doc?” Curiosity piqued, I watch as he stops pretending to work out and stands close to me. His body language is tense, his shoulders tight. He doesn’t want to be here.

“Come on. Let’s grab a drink,” I suggest.

Leading him over to the water cooler, I make a point of pouring two cups and handing one to the red-faced man at my side. While I drink, I look over the rest of the men and women training, not looking directly at him. When he bends to tie his gleaming white shoelace, one that’s already tied, I hide a smile. This guy thinks he’s James Bond. While he’s still hunched over, he takes a slip of paper from his pocket and slips it under the bench beside us.

“Alpha trusted you to bring this request to me, so I’m trusting you to bring the results straight to him. Nobody else. Can you do that?”

Nodding, I still don’t look down at him, waiting until he stands to face him, fixing a neutral expression on my face as though we’re just having a casual chat.

“Am I the only one losing sleep, doc?” I pin him with a stare, and feel a bit bad as he squirms under its weight. He’s a clever wolf, but not a strong one. Being among so many strong personalities must be a real struggle for him.

“It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to say. But maybe hang around after he reads that to see if he needs anything else.”

Again, I nod, before clapping him on the back, hard. “You gonna stick around for the end of training? I can teach you some moves.” He visibly pales, shuffling out of reach.

“No. I felt it was too obvious to come to your room, this was the only other place I could be sure to catch you.” He looks down at his attire, knowing he doesn’t blend in. “Although maybe this is just as bad.”

Laughing, I sit down on the bench and pretend to stretch my legs, quickly dropping to pick up the paper when I’m certain no one is looking. Slipping it into my pocket, my fingers itch to open it. What’s so surprising the doc doesn’t feel like he can let anyone else deliver it?

“Why didn’t you just bring it to him?” Surely the doc can see the sick alpha anytime he wants.

“I’m not allowed.” Flabbergasted, I can’t stop myself from turning to face him, jaw hanging open. “Lucia insists on being there, and I’m only allowed to visit once a month. We have no privacy, plus they have their own doctor they prefer to use…”

Shrugging as if it’s no big deal, I can see how upset he really is. Wringing his hands together in front of him, his eyes dart around nervously, checking to see if anyone is paying attention to us. He’s dying to leave.

“I’m sorry. Let me talk to Joseph and see if he can do anything.”

With a huff that tells me he’s tried that already, he frowns. “Just get that to him. And do whatever he asks. I’ll help in any way I can.”
