He doesn’t move back and give me space, he leans closer, his eyes finding mine, staring deeply. The hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It’s so intimate that the urge to look away is powerful. His dominance is impressive, but I refuse to give in.

“I wouldn’t be thinking about you at all if you weren’t lurking around my house at night. You’re not as slick as you think you are.”

Anger flashes in his eyes as I insult his spying skills, unfairly. If it weren’t for my bear's sense of smell, I’d never have known he was there. He’s good. So good, in fact, that it makes me nervous. I don’t want this man knowing everything about me. For years, I’ve carefully crafted a life of my own, away from the legacy my father’s reputation dumped on all of us. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t need this jackass making me feel bad for something that’s not my fault.

“I might not be as slick as you are…” a taunting smile curves those luscious lips as he tips his head down, his eyes fixed firmly on the apex of my thighs as he breathes in; “but I’ll figure out what you’re all hiding. In good time.”

I gasp in indignation, my face flaming. He knows the effect he’s having on me. Raising a hand to shove him away, my blood pressure spikes when instead of meeting hard muscle, my hand is caught against his chest as he grabs my wrist and holds me still.

“You’re mine, Deputy Lennox. I have you in my sights.” He tilts forward to look over my shoulder at the trunk behind me, crowding me and forcing me to lean back. I can barely keep my toes to the ground. Trapping me, he rests his palms on the cool metal on either side of me. When his hips brush mine, I feel something impressively thick and hard resting against my stomach. A little whimper escapes me as his warm breath fans my heated skin and turns my legs to jelly.

“Deputy, I hope to God you have nothing to do with what’s going on around here, because, if you do, I’ll make you pay.”

That’s a bad thing. Being threatened by this man is a bad thing, I repeat, but my body doesn’t get the message. His words inexplicably turn me on, my brain taking them as a promise, not a warning. I suspect he could say just about anything right now, and it would have the same effect on me as I stare into his eyes. Those pools of liquid silver that seem to peer right into my soul, looking for answers.

“And if I don’t have anything to do with it? What will you do then?” My voice doesn’t sound like my own. It comes out strangled, laced with a hunger I can’t hide.

The delicate brush of his lips against my throat is almost enough to make me come on the spot, drunk on desire and completely at his mercy. My fingers touch his, sparks dancing across my skin, as I scramble to hold onto the trunk, needing to get purchase on something to stop myself from slipping forward, from sinking to my knees in front of him.

“Then you’re still going to be mine, and I’ll still make you pay for not giving me the information I want, but in a much more fun way.”

My eyes slide closed as I imagine how good that would be.

This man is bad news for me and my self-esteem, because, even though he’s issuing threats on my turf, all I can think about is what his face would look like if I wrapped my lips around him and took his length into my mouth. I bet he tastes like heaven.

As Chase steps away, giving me a dangerous look and walking back toward the bar, I curse the Walker sisters for convincing me to agree to this plan. After leaving me all alone and buzzing with need, I knew I should have been staying as far away from this man as possible.

Leah pushes the door open with a loud creak and crawls out of the passenger seat on all fours, landing in a heap on the ground. I barely glance at her, still too busy picking my jaw up from the ground. She scrambles to her feet, crouching down so she can’t be seen from the road, and stares in the direction her brother went. I’m so grateful she’s a human and can’t scent my reaction to his presence as it pools between my thighs. It’s bad enough that I know and he knows.

But she’s not blind and she’s not deaf. In fact, she’s annoyingly observant, and she can see how flustered he left me.

“Who the hell was that, and what has he done with my brother?”

CHAPTER 11

CHASE

I force myself to retreat before I do something I shouldn’t, but Natalie’s taste is still on my lips.

I fight the urge to lick them as I walk away, to pull her flavour into my mouth and savour it. Shoving my hands deep into my pockets, I struggle not to bring the fingers that touched her hand to my nose like some kind of deviant.

What kind of spell is she weaving around me?

I’ve never felt this drawn to someone. The fact that she’s the one person from whom I should be keeping a personal distance is making my utter lack of control even more confusing. I pride myself on always keeping my head.

Storming into Taaffe’s, my humour darkens further when I see the Jones brothers propping up the bar, sharing a joke with Sean and looking like they haven’t a care in the world.

If I could cook, or had bothered buying any food to put in the fridge, I’d leave right now. But I’m starving, and I can’t avoid them forever. Maybe for a little longer, though. I’m still feeling thrown by my encounter outside.

I hold up my phone, pretending I need to take a call and slide into a dark booth in the corner rather than joining them. Hayley has repeatedly tried to set up a family dinner.

No thanks.

Getting pally with them will just make it harder to do what needs to be done, which is to remove my sisters from their lives.

Studying them closely, I frown. Van forwarded me background checks on the entire Jones clan and surprisingly, the only one of them that has a criminal record is their mother, Marie. It was beginning to look like the Jones’s are a dead end.

The businesses are squeaky clean, well run, and profitable. There isn’t a hint of improper conduct, illegal dealings or nefarious characters infiltrating the family ranks. At first, I was relieved, thinking maybe I’m completely off the mark, that they’ve done nothing wrong.
