My eyes widen. I knew he and Lane were together, but I didn’t realize it was the articles I published about him that pushed them into it. Future wife. Wow. “Thank you. You seem very happy together.”

“We are.” His eyes are soft and far away. Something that feels a lot like jealousy twinges. I’ve never had anyone who got that look on their face for me. “Anyways. Say the word, I’ll get you out of whatever this is.” He waves his hand at Jonah’s office.

“No.” I shake my head. “I don’t want to get out. I want to go over the top.” My eyes narrow as I take in Jonah’s door.

Miles barks a laugh. “I approve. But good luck. He’s the most hard-headed person I know.”

I give him a small smile. “Good thing I am too.”

An hour later, George appears at the door of the storage room with an annoyed look on their face and a protein bar in their hand.

“For you.” They hold it out to me.

“Why?” I eye it suspiciously. “Is it poisoned?”

A smile curves their glossed lips. “Jonah wishes. But no, Miles sent me. Lane has made him into a soft-hearted fool. He said Jonah trashed your lunch.” They grimace. “That’s shitty.”

I accept the protein bar. “You don’t think I deserve it? For reporting on the company?”

“No. It made my job more interesting.” They grin, full and open. “Though I think I deserve a little more attention in the press.”

A surprised laugh tears from my throat. “I’ll see what I can do. Have you done anything scandalous lately?”

They tap a manicured nail on their chin. “I’m happily partnered up, so my days of tearing up the West Village are over. I could make a scene on 57th Street?”

“No, no. Jonah would probably string you up by your ankles.”

“Unlikely.” They roll their eyes. “He needs me too much.”

“Maybe a fashion spread? Our readers love those. And your outfits are great.” I eye their smooth, dewy skin. “Or a skincare regime. Assistant to the billionaires and how I stay beautiful. That could work.”

“Ooh. Yes. I’ll do a sheet mask tonight and make sure I’m looking fresh tomorrow.”

I smile. “I’ll bring the camera.”

George watches me unwrap the protein bar. “I thought I was finally going to get some help around here. And he has you sorting papers that we could easily digitize and shred.” They purse their lips.

“They keep you busy?”

“Like you wouldn’t believe. Miles is easygoing, in his own way, but Jonah is exacting. Nothing is good enough for him. He’s particular and demanding. The staff are terrified of him. And so are his interview candidates. You’re not, though. I can tell.”

“Sorry.” I give them a sheepish smile. “I think I’m here to be punished, not here to work. Not really. I serve at the pleasure of the Prince of Darkness.”

George lets out a surprised laugh. “I like the nickname.”

“At least someone does.”

George says goodbye and a tiny spark of hope flares. If this is how the next six months go, I may survive.

Jonah

“You’re being a dick. I mean, more than usual.” Miles swirls his whiskey so the amber liquid catches the dim light in the bar at Kings Cove. The back room is reserved for our exclusive use, and the secret hideaway makes a convenient meeting place, since it’s on the ground floor of our office building. The wall sconces shed dim light, and the red velvet upholstery shines like rubies.

Jason snorts. “Has anyone quit yet?”

I scowl at my friends. “She can’t quit. Besides, she deserves it, and you know it.”
