But I don’t have any messages.

I find Lena’s contact and call it.

“Hey, boss,” she answers right away.

“Where are you?”

“At the estate.”

“With Sophie? She’s still there?”

“Yes. She tried to play a match with Betsy, but called it quits after the first set because she was cramping.”

“Cramping?”

“It’s the time of the month so she took some meds and went back to bed.”

I release the breath I had been holding during our entire conversation.

“She said something about Dante coming over later.”

“Dante’s coming to the estate?”

“Yes. Is that a problem? I thought you didn’t mind him visiting.”

“I don’t. I just thought Sophie would go to him.”

After a moment of silence, Lena asks, “Are you on your way to LA?”

“I was about to take off a little earlier than planned, but maybe I shouldn’t go.”

“Sophie will be fine, sir. There’s nothing you can do for her. She’s got pain relievers and a heating pad. Toni and I will keep an eye on her.”

“No, it’s not just Sophie. It’s also Flynn.”

“What’s up? The little prick is still lurking around here somewhere.”

“He’s still there? Why?”

“I don’t know. What me to go find him and ask?”

“Yes. Don’t take your eyes off him. And have one of the guards track down all the brothel surveillance footage from the day of the drone attack. I want to know where he was and what he was doing the entire time.”

“Wow. You think your brother could’ve been behind the attack on Sophie? But why?”

“Because if anything happened to her, Dante would’ve killed me,” I explain. It’s so damn obvious. Why didn’t I realize it before now? Flynn hates me. Of course he wants me dead because he wants our family’s money and thinks that once I’m out of the way, he’ll have access. But he would also have to kill Owen since he’s third in line. I knew the son of a bitch wasn’t trustworthy, but I never expected him to betray me, or try to kill me.

Suddenly, I recall the night before the charity poker tournament. It was so long ago, and so traumatic that I had forgotten everything about the days preceding it. “Flynn was in the event room the night before the bombing,” I say aloud, forgetting about the phone at my ear until Lena mutters, “Oh fuck.”

The memory comes back to me clear as day. Hell, I had forgotten it before now, maybe because of the concussion or the chaos. Either way, I remember it all now.

“He was begging to come to the event the next day. It was right after his third DWI, he refused to get sober, and I didn’t want him to act a fool in front of the celebrities who were there to raise money for charity.”

“But Flynn was there long enough to possibly plant the bomb?”

“Yes. He wants me dead and must have been working with Petrov or Kozlov. He would do anything for a little cash. And he was planning to let Dante finish the job for him when he attacked Sophie because his first plan failed,” I tell her. “Put every guard at the estate on Sophie’s room right now.”

“Yes, sir,” Lena agrees. “But she’s in your room, not hers.”
