“Lochlan?” Her blue eyes blink at me then the phone before staring at me again, her cheeks glistening. “Your plane didn’t explode?”

“I’m so sorry I left you, baby,” I tell her as I go to her and peel the weapons from her shaking hands. “Are you okay? Did he touch you? Hurt you?”

She shakes her head. “I’m sorry I…he wanted to kill you. I thought I was too late,” she says. “He wanted to kill me at first. I convinced him not to and-and he decided he wanted to put me in the cuffs and cut me up instead.”

My gun is raised and aimed at Flynn’s head again, but Sophie quickly drops her weapons to the mattress in a clatter, then her bloody right hand covers the arm of my suit and lowers it.

“Not yet,” she says softly.

Turning to look at her, I roar, “He killed all those people in the bombing! He sent the fucking drones after you, killed my guards, and was going to blow up my plane!”

Sophie winces then stares at Flynn on the floor but continues clutching my arm. “I know. I know. Just…let him suffer a little longer. He can’t hurt us anymore.”

God, I love this woman.

“Get him out of here and go help the women,” I tell my guards. “Let the paramedics keep him alive, but don’t let them take him to the hospital.”

“Yes, sir,” Wolfe agrees as he and Wade grab either of Flynn’s arms to drag him out of the bedroom squalling.

Once they’re gone, I lower my gun, putting it down on the bed to cradle Sophie’s damp face in my hands, pressings my lips to hers.

She’s here, she’s alive. Flynn didn’t hurt her, and fuck, I hope she’s going to stay.

The fact that Sophie kisses me back gives me hope that she’s not going to leave me. Still, I need to know for sure. How could she want to stay in this house another second when she’s nearly been killed here twice?

Pulling away first, Sophie says, “Toni? Lena? Are they…”

“Alive but badly injured. They tried to crawl up the steps to protect you.”

She nods and then throws her arms around my neck, pulling me to her. “I thought you were dead. That the plane left…and I would be too late.”

“I didn’t want to leave you after our fight. Then I finally figured out the bomber was Flynn. It was my own damn brother all along.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispers against my neck.

“You don’t have anything to apologize for. I’m the one who is sorry. I keep failing you, and I’m terrified of losing you. I’d give anything to keep you, princess. Anything. Everything.”

Her bloody fingers clutch the back of my suit jacket tighter. “Do you love me or–”

“Yes,” I assure her. Pulling back to see her face, I cup her chin to lift her glistening eyes to mine. “Of course, I love you. Last night you said you knew I did even if I didn’t say it.”

“But this morning, I thought you just married me to have a family, to save your money. Then I…I just mutilated your brother…”

“Fuck the lawsuit and fuck Flynn,” I grumble as I wrap my arms around her again. “He had it coming, and I’ll pay every penny they want from me. All I care about is you, princess. Only you.”

The rest of the afternoon and into the next day is a shitshow of telling cops who want to talk to Sophie to fuck off until the smoke literally clears, then convincing Dante that his daughter is safe and unharmed, capable of taking care of herself since I let her down again. The easiest part was lying to hospital staff, telling them Sophie and I were family so we could see Lena and Toni.

Both of the guards suffered serious injuries. Lena’s right arm was all shot up, and it could take months of physical therapy to get full use back in it. She also needed surgery to repair the damage.

Toni took a bullet through her inner shoulder, just missing her heart, and two in her leg. She lost a lot of blood, but the surgeons say she should also make a full recovery.

Sophie and I then spent the rest of the night going house to house to break the news to the families of the deceased estate guards. It feels like their blood is soaking my hands, even though it was Flynn who killed them.

I should’ve figured out he was behind the bombing, the drones, and killed him before he hurt anyone else.

I’ll never forgive myself for that failure.

For nearly losing Sophie. For the fate worse than death she could’ve endured if I hadn’t come back home.
