Part of me knows I should have quickly removed the pill, then swallowed it once I was in the changing room.

Now if I go back to the drawer, it might look suspicious if Lochlan is watching the security footage. I could take my pair of panties back and change them for a different pair.

Ultimately, I decide to wait until later, to think about my options during dinner.

Two place settings are laid out on the dining table, along with water and a glass of red wine. I take a big gulp of the wine while weighing my choices. Not to mention, I’ll probably need the alcohol buzz to get through another meal with my perverted husband.

Speaking of the philandering devil, Lochlan strolls into the dining room right on time according to the antique grandfather clock, looking too damn good in his three-piece suit. He looks so…perfect as if he stepped out of a billboard advertising men’s cologne. Except, unlike a beautiful model, he puts knives through men and fucks prostitutes.

“Did you have a good day?” Lochlan asks as soon as he sits down at the opposite head of the table. His mere appearance initiates the presentation of salads which was brought out by staff that I met in the kitchen earlier when I grabbed a quick lunch.

I study his face for any signs that he knows about the pill. He doesn’t look any angrier than usual or suspicious.

“Sophie?” he says to get my attention, reminding me of his question.

“Yes, I did.” There’s a long pause, so I decide the polite thing would be to ask him the same question. “How was your day?”

“Fine.”

He doesn’t give me any other details, just continues to watch me intently. He’s a beautiful savage, and I think he might kill whoever gave me the pill, if he hasn’t already. And just like that, I make my decision. I won’t take it. I won’t risk anyone’s life because I stupidly had unprotected sex with my heathen husband the night before we got married.

A tiny voice in my head is also relieved. While I don’t want to be a mother, at least I know Lochlan would keep me forever if I am pregnant. Belonging to him is better than being alone. At least, I think it is.

I finally stop staring at him long enough to remember that if it weren’t for his generosity, I wouldn’t have spent the afternoon doing what I love most in the world. And since I don’t plan on sleeping with him to show my appreciation, I decide to at least give him the words. “Thank you for putting in the tennis court for me.”

“You’re welcome.” He frowns at my blue blouse with sheer sleeves. “I thought you might wear your tennis outfit to dinner.”

“Why would I do that? It was sweaty and dirty.”

“No reason,” he says, but it sounds like there is obviously a reason. Whatever. If he wants me to know he’ll tell me. I won’t waste my time obsessing over his every look or comment trying to figure him out. If the person who gave me the pill has already been punished, there’s nothing I can do about it now.

“I watched you playing earlier. Got so hard I had to rub one out.”

Is he referring to… does “rub one out” mean what I think it does? While watching me play tennis?

Rather than encourage more details from him, I swallow another gulp of wine, then dig into my salad, starved after all the calories burned on the court.

“You seemed to have found workarounds for hiding your nakedness from me in the bathroom,” Lochlan eventually remarks.

Lifting my wine glass, I swallow another sip, telling him, “You haven’t earned the right to see me naked.”

“You haven’t earned that right either. But me? Eighteen diamonds, nearly one hundred carats, along with your own personal tennis court and staff aren’t enough for me to earn it?”

I look at the bracelet shimmering under the chandelier, then him. “I didn’t ask you for those things. Besides, you have plenty of money. You only went to the trouble of buying things for me to appease my father and try to bribe me to fuck you. So no, you haven’t earned anything from me.”

“What do I have to do to earn it, Sophie?” Lochlan asks. There’s an edge to his voice, almost like he’s desperate. Desperate for me? Doubtful when he has all sorts of other options.

“You can’t buy me. And I’ve already told you what I wanted,” I remind him just before a phone rings. It’s Lochlan’s since mine is in the bedroom. I forgot it and everything else once I saw the pill. The device is sitting on the table all lit up, and he doesn’t hesitate to answer it even though we’re eating dinner and are in the middle of a discussion.

“Let me guess, you want to talk to Sophie?” he says, which means it must be my father or Vanessa. “I don’t fucking know why she didn’t answer your call. Maybe because we were in the middle of dinner, and she doesn’t appear to have her phone with her.” With a sigh, he holds out the phone to me. I can’t reach it without getting up and walking over to him.

Which I do, then snatch the device from his palm and put it up to my ear. “Hello?”

“Are you okay? When you didn’t answer the phone…” my father’s frantic voice asks.

“I’m fine. We’re eating dinner.”

“How was your day?”
