And if she found out that I fucked another woman tonight then that may be enough to push my princess over the crazy bitch ledge.

Just because I refuse to cross that line, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t indulge in some live-action porn while easing the ache.

“Do you by chance have a white tennis skirt?” I ask Shana when I release her throat.

After cleaning up following my long day at the tennis center, I step into the dining room a few minutes after seven expecting to find a grumpy Lochlan waiting for me. But his seat at the head of the table is empty and there’s not even a place setting for him.

“Lochlan just messaged me,” Lena says when she comes in behind me. “He won’t be able to make it home in time for dinner tonight.”

“Oh,” I say when I turn around to face her, ready to head back to my room. “Then I’ll just wait until he’s back to eat too. I’m not that hungry,” I lie.

Lena winces. “He specifically said that you shouldn’t wait for him.”

“He doesn’t want me to wait?”

With a few pokes of her finger on her phone she turns it around, showing me the screen and the exact message from Lochlan.

“Wow. So, he won’t be home until late tonight? Where is he?” I didn’t see that information on her text message.

“He didn’t say.”

“Right, but do you know where he’s at or what he’s doing?” When Lena doesn’t answer me, her silence is answer enough. “The guards all communicate with each other throughout the day, so you do know where he’s at, don’t you?”

Lena doesn’t say a word, so I look around her tall frame to ask Toni. “Will you tell me?”

Her eyes go from me to Lena who turns to face her, as if to intimidate her.

“I’m sorry, Sophie,” Lena mutters.

“Yeah, sorry, Soph. He’s the boss,” Toni adds. “You know how it is.”

Scoffing, I shake my head and glare at each in turn. “I can’t believe you two! I thought we were…” I start to say friends, but Lena and Toni aren’t my friends. They’re paid by Lochlan to keep me safe. Their loyalty will always be to the man who pays their salaries.

And since I’m in such a bitchy mood, mad at them and my husband wherever the hell he is, I do something really shitty.

“Could one of you make sure the lights are turned on over the tennis court? I need to hit some balls for a few hours, probably until it’s dark out.”

“Now?” Lena asks at the same time Toni screeches, “It won’t be dark for hours!”

“Oh, right. If I leave the house and Lochlan’s not home, then you have to stay with me. I’m so sorry.” I take a little pleasure in throwing back the worthless apology in their faces before I go get changed. “I hope neither of you had any plans tonight.”

I do feel pretty wretched for making Toni and Lena work over tonight. I shouldn’t take my anger at Lochlan out on them. It’s just, I didn’t want to be alone tonight, and I am a little pissed that after spending every day for nearly two weeks with them, I stupidly thought they liked being around me even if it was their job.

After years of being on my own at home, it felt nice to have company and easy conversations. The guards my father hired never spoke a word to me, probably because he forbade them. I’m glad because it meant I never forgot who they worked for and why they were there.

Honestly, there’s no reason why Toni and Lena can’t just ask two of the many guards positioned around the grounds to take over babysitting me so they can go home.

I even suggested it after about half an hour, but Lena informed me that it was Lochlan’s rule that they stay, and she wouldn’t break it.

Where the hell could that bastard be that they wouldn’t tell me?

It’s obviously not good wherever it is, or why else would they keep it from me?

Asshole.
