One night? Is that all she wanted from me?

God, I’m a fucking idiot. What did I think this was? Did I think this beautiful girl wanted to have my damn babies or something? This girl who must have guys her own age going crazy for her all the time? Of course she only wanted a one-night fling. Something light, not serious.

Esme frowns at my expression. “Are you okay?”

I swallow hard and nod. “Fine.” But it’s not fine. I can’t let her go like this, not without knowing I can see her again. “Can I get your number?”

Her face lights up a little at my suggestion, and I feel a flicker of hope in my gut.

“Sure,” she says, reciting the digits while I add her to my contacts. “I’m sorry but I really have to go now or I’m going to be late. Bye, Grant.”

She leans in and surprises me with a kiss on the lips, sweet and soft.

“Bye Esme.”

She waves as she hurries down the street, turning back for one last look before she’s out of sight. I close the door. The house feels so empty without her. I swear it’s colder too. I look down at my phone, staring at Esme’s number, my mind whirring. I can’t get the words ‘one-night stand’ out of my damn head, but there’s a new determination welling up inside me, something that drowns out all the doubts.

One night? Fuck that.

I just met the girl of my dreams, and I sure as hell won’t let her get away that easy. I’d practically given up on finding somebody when I saw Esme at the concert last night, but she made me feel something I’ve never felt before, something so powerful that I can hardly even understand it. This is once-in-a-lifetime stuff. I’m sure of it. No way am I going to let it pass me by; I think I’d regret it for the rest of my life.

Making up my mind, I head upstairs to shower and get changed.

As soon as I’m ready, I’m heading straight for Chester.

Esme

One night, that’s what I said. One mind-blowing night. A good time with someone hot, just to help me get over being dumped by Josh. That was the plan. And in a way, it worked because I’m sure as hell not thinking about Josh anymore. Grant has taken over my whole mind. I can barely concentrate on the road in front of me as I remember our night together, the way he touched me and tasted me, worshipping my body like he couldn’t get enough. I never knew sex could be like that…so special, so intimate, so freakin’ good.

I pass the sign for Chester and turn left toward the bistro, trying my hardest not to think about Grant. But I feel like I left a piece of myself back in Desire Falls.

No, I need to stop this, I think. The idea was to get over Josh and move on with my life…take some time being free and single without all the hurtful crap that relationships can bring. I didn’t have a one-night stand with Grant so I could start obsessing over him. It was only supposed to be a distraction, a one-night fling. He knows that. I know that.

I pull up outside the bistro just as my phone starts to ring, and Millie’s name pops up on the screen. I answer the call, and I’ve barely said ‘hi’ before she starts bombarding me with questions.

“Esme, oh my God, tell me everything! I need details.”

I get out of the car, hurrying toward the bistro with my phone to my ear.

“Sorry Millie, I literally just got to work. I can’t talk right now.”

She groans. “Fine, but you better call me the second you get a break. Just tell me one thing, really quick…was it good?”

I can’t help but grin. “The best.”

Millie squeals. “Awesome! Well, now you’ve got that out of your system, you can finally start living your best life as a single girl. No more Josh, no more relationship crap, just friends and fun and good times.”

“Yeah. That sounds great.” But the words are hollow in my mouth. I want to mean them, but then I remember Grant’s face when he saw me at the concert, the way he couldn’t take his eyes off me, the way my heart was practically in my throat. With a sigh, I add, “I really have to go now. My boss hates when we’re late.”

“Fine,” Millie says, drawing out the word. “But call soon!”

“Will do. See you later.”

I end the call and hurry into the bistro.
