“I shouldn't.”

“Why?” she hesitated, “I can’t be the only one who feels this.”

“Sarah's been hurt enough.”

“I know she isn't the only one you're trying to protect.”

He grunted, proving her instincts were right.

“I don't want to hurt either. Wh-when I'm with you I don't hurt,” she admitted. “Wes, please. I'm staying, yes. Let me in.”

Wes hesitated, the muscles in his forearms flexing.

“There’s something you I have to tell you…” he began, unease uncurling on his face. “After Kat…” he trailed off, “I…”

“Oh, I’ve been tested since Jason and I haven’t…”

He pressed his finger to her mouth, shushing her. “That’s not where I was going. Although, I have been tested as well.” He closed his eyes for a brief second before he looked back at her.

“After Kat left, I didn’t want to go through all that again.” Melody scrunched her face in confusion. “What I mean to say is I had a vasectomy so I wouldn’t get someone else pregnant. I didn’t want to raise a second child on my own.”

“Oh.” She didn’t know where he was going but it wasn’t this.

“Oh? You don’t have anything else to say?”

“I-um,” Mel looked down at her hands wringing in her lap.

Wes pulled her chin up so that she was looking him in the eyes.

“Tell me what you’re thinking.”

Mel hesitates for a moment. “Is it bad if I still want you? It’ll take more than that to scare me away.”

Wes groaned and pressed his forehead against her neck.

“Please, Daddy.”

“It feels wrong to hear you call me that.”

“What? Oh, you mean Daddy?”

“Yes,” he hissed.

“What'll happen if I do?”

“Mel…”

“Yes, Daddy?”

“You're going to cash checks…” His warning tone made her wet. “There will be consequences.”

“Ooh.” She shrugged, disentangling herself from Wes with a sweet smile. “Okay, I guess I’ll go finish up my work then.”

Melody snuck off to the back while Wes finished up some paperwork. She grabbed a pen and napkin to put her money where her mouth was. She intended to let Wes know exactly what she wanted. She drew out a check on the napkin putting herself on the dotted line, literally.

Mel giggled as she folded the note between her fingers and skipped back to the front of the shop. She dropped the note before Wes.
