“Melody is…” What was she? Everything. “It took eight months to build the balance we have.”

“Age doesn't matter. Who you love doesn't matter. How you love is what matters, Wesley.”

Melody was someone he could love. Someone he wanted to love.

“Let me put it this way.” Grandma Mitchell didn’t sugarcoat things. Nice or otherwise. “Would you be okay if someone else asked her out? Come to think of it, Graham is still single.”

“Fuck no.” He’d snap him in half.

“That mouth!! But, you see that right there, the look in your eyes says it all.” She leaned in and touched his face. Her skin smelled of lotion that brought him back to his childhood. “Despite what some think, women aren’t mind readers. Especially with matters concerning the heart. Tell her how you feel and whatever hurdles you think you have in your relationship.”

“Thanks.” Wes kissed her hand and then her cheek. “You always know what to say.”

“You don’t get to be my age without picking up a few things. There was a lot more to life than the interwebs when I was your age.”

“Oh, don’t you start. Pop-pop used to tell me all of the stories when we went fishing. I believe there’s a story about you getting locked in a department store. Something about thinking it was…”

“Harold Vaughn Mitchell, if you weren’t already in the next life I would have sent you there myself!” she laughed through her sharp words. “He promised never to tell anyone. But I’m sure he left out his more salacious tales.”

Wes schooled his features. “I know nothing, Grams, Scout's honor.”

She playfully smacked his arm. “I didn’t forget they kicked you out!”

Wes walked into his home after being with his grandmother most of the day. He heard laughter and music ringing out through the house, bringing a smile to his face.

Quietly, he tiptoed around the corner to see his girls dancing around and being silly. Wes could only smile as he watched Melody spin his daughter around the room.

They both giggled and pranced around the living room, singing without a care in the world. Together they sang loudly and off key.

The music faded into the background as he stared at his two loves. Wes’ heart ached at the sight, knowing he screwed up this morning with Mel.

He knew she was probably hurt from his actions but he was determined to make it up to her. He was done hiding her from the world. Melody was his and he intended to let everyone know. Wes needed to hold onto his courage and not let the ‘what ifs’ of life take over.

“How about we make some dinner, bug?” Mel lowered Sarah to the floor.

“Waffles?” Sarah asked hopeful.

“You’re going to turn into a waffle!” They both laughed. “How about we make a homemade pizza?”

“Yes! That sounds fun, Melly!”

“Good, let’s move this party to the kitchen.”

Wes decided it was time to make his presence known. He moved into the kitchen and couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

The granite island, sink, and his girls at the center of the disaster in front of him.

“Papa! Look out!” Sarah squeaked as she hid behind the counter, already covered in flour.

Wes pulled his shoes off, and looked over at Melody who dusted her hands of flour. She still had white streaks on her cheek and in her hair.

“Aren't you supposed to be the adult?" Wes asked with a smirk. He tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and left traces of flour on his fingers.

She scrunched her nose in thought. “I don't know. I don't think it was wise for someone to leave me in charge.” Melody blew flour from her palm at Wes and giggled. “No adults here mister." Pressing her lips together, she looked up at him. “Sorry 'bout your luck.”

“Luck, huh. Oh, I'll give you luck, little girl.” Wes leaned in, darting his gaze to see that Sarah was out of earshot “You're going to need luck when I get my hands on you the second we're alone.”

Melody’s eyes widened and she swallowed hard.
