“I don’t know,” she admitted with a huff. Melody shrugged her shoulders, feeling irritated and uncomfortable in her own skin. She turned her eyes toward the ceiling, focusing on the intricate dark toned pattern on the wall above them.

“Were you uncomfortable with him hearing us?”

“No. No, it wasn’t you.”

“Okay. What did the fuckwitt say that stung so deep?”

“Nothing.” Melody grunted in frustration, pressing her palms into her eyes, willing the upheaval in her stomach to rid itself through the tears she hated shedding. “That’s the fucking problem.”

Wes gently pulled her hands away from her face. Her vision snowed behind her scrunched lids and she sucked in a deep breath. Cool lips pressed against her face as Wes peppered her with soft reassuring touches. He reassured her even in the silence.

“I h-hadn’t talked to him since he packed his shit and mine.” She laughed bitterly. “I can’t believe I let it go on for as long as I did. And I know, I know that if anyone knew they wouldn’t have.”

“You’re right.”

“But I’m an adult that knows better! I know this, but there was something that twisted in my head when I heard his voice. Psycho catnip or something.”

Melody hastily ran her fingers through her hair, tugging the base of her scalp.

“There was nothing he said. Hearing his voice made me angry. It made me feel stupid.”

“Almost like you heard who he really was for the first time?”

“Yeah. You know it’s only because of you.”

“Oh?”

“You don’t make me feel small.” Melody smiled awkwardly, feeling bad about her outburst. “I didn’t mean to drag you into my mess.”

“I don’t see anyone kicking and screaming.”

Melody anxiously picked at the buttons to his shirt.

“Can I ask you something, buttercup?”

“Anything as long as it’s not ‘how fast can I run’. I’m not up for a chase.”

“What did he mean when he said ‘That place is disgusting’?”

“You caught that?”

“Daddies pick up on everything.”

“H-he wasn’t a fan.”

“Of the club, or in general?”

“He thinks it’s full of freaks and weirdos.”

“Well, I’m particularly fond of this weirdo.”

“Daddy’s little weirdo?” Melody giggled despite herself. “I could have Jules make buttons.”

“I’ll even make you t-shirts, but you’re not avoiding the rest of this conversation.”

“This wasn’t what we came in here for.” Mel nibbled on her lip.

“Plans change at any point in any scene. Do you remember your word?”
