"I see," Elara said, her expression thoughtful. "Near Stephanie, huh? Beautiful, rich, Stephanie." She took a sip of her wine.

I fixed her with a serious look. "Wait a second, are you in love with Stephanie?”

She laughed so hard she almost spat out her wine.

“And to think you were calling me jealous a few minutes ago," I said, chuckling.

"Me? Jealous?" Elara scoffed. "You and I aren’t even in a relationship. You're a free agent, Cole. You can get together with anyone you like. Including your ex-wife."

"You know I’d never do that,” I said, maybe a little too quickly. “I'm here for you. Until you leave, that is." I threaded my fingers between hers.

Elara looked down at our entwined hands, her smile fading. After a deep breath, she lifted her gaze to meet mine. "Cole, I think it's probably a good idea if we see a bit less of each other," she said softly. "I've been struggling a little with feelings, and the more I see you, the harder it is to ignore them."

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. "Elara . . . " I had to think of what was best for her. "If that's the way you feel, then I completely agree.” I stopped short of admitting my own feelings. I didn't want to complicate things. "The last thing I want is for you to get hurt."

She opened her mouth as though she was about to say something else, but then she pursed her lips tight shut. At last, she simply said, "Fine."

"That’s what you want, isn't it?"

"Of course. It's for the best." Her smile didn't reach her eyes.

"Good," I nodded, struggling to keep the disappointment from my voice. "I think you're making the right choice."

"Yes. I'm making the right choice."

Silence settled between us, broken only by soft music in the background. In the glow of the string lights, Elara looked almost ethereal. She wore two silver, crescent moon earrings. I watched them tremble slightly as she breathed.

"You know, I'll be in Goldharbor Bay most days, anyway,” I said, trying to somehow reassure her. “And you'll be selling the bar and getting ready for baking school. Time was gonna be tight for our, uh, fling."

“Yeah.”

"And just because we're seeing less of each other, it doesn't mean we can’t see each other at all, right?"

"Right," she agreed hesitantly.

"We might not have the future, but we have this moment right now."

As if drawn by an invisible force, Elara leaned over the small table and our lips met in a tender, soulful kiss.

"Life is just moments," she murmured as I kissed her neck. "And really good pizza."

I couldn't let this moment slip away. Without breaking contact, I stood up and scooped Elara into my arms. Her legs wrapped around my waist as I carried her into my trailer. Our lips met again and again with increasing urgency, fueled by the longing we had both been trying to suppress.

"Elara," I said, my voice ragged as I set her down on the living room couch. “I’ve been so fucking desperate to see you.”

I undressed her and she sighed. “Me too, Cole. Me too.”

"You smell like cotton candy," I said, burying my face between her thighs. I kissed her sex and felt her hands thread through my hair. "You taste like peach."

"Eat me up, Cole," she moaned.

I swirled my tongue around her clit, that delicious nub that made her groan as I drank in her sweetness. My fingers gripped her thighs, marking the pale flesh. Her body responded to me quickly as she bucked and tensed, and then, before she'd had a chance to come down from the peak of her pleasure, I unzipped my fly and squeezed my hot erection into her, feeling the last constrictions of her pussy against my hungry cock.

Moments.

Free will.

Really good fucking.
