"You sleep okay, boy? Want your breakfast?"

Anthony always wanted breakfast, no matter the time. He and I had that in common.

In the morning light, the bar looked like a blank canvas, an empty white space with polished floorboards and beautiful antique tiles. Cole's hard work was all over the place. Why on earth hadn’t anyone offered on it? Everyone was insane.

I fed Anthony and checked my phone. There was a message from Lily.

Where are you at?

I replied that I was in hiding at the bar. If I hadn't been so anxious about bumping into people, I would have already headed over to her store for a coffee. I only had to wait a couple of minutes before I heard a light tapping at the door.

"Good morning, my sweet little floor-dweller," Lily said as I opened the door. She had coffees for us both. “Interesting that you choose an empty room over sleeping at my place.”

“I got in late,” I said. “Didn’t want to disturb you.”

“Well, it turned out to be a good decision,” said Lily. “I had a very hot encounter with a lifeguard last night, and ended up taking him back to my place.”

“Oh?”

Lily grinned. “Let’s just say he might be The One.”

“Already?” I asked, sipping my coffee. “How do you know?”

“He made me come three times before he had sex with me. And he let me choose the sex music.”

I chuckled. “Wow. I’d better get my wedding outfit ready.”

Lily sighed. “Problem is, he left this morning without waking me up. Do you think that’s a bad sign?”

I grimaced. “Maybe someone was drowning and he had to go save them?”

Lily stared at me. “You think?”

"Anyway, it's good to see you!" I said, changing the subject, patting the lovely shiny tiles beside me.

Lily sat down. "So, I guess you're fully committed to not seeing Cole, then. Staying here last night instead of the trailer.”

"Right."

"Except you are going to see him." She checked her watch. "At the planning meeting in four hours."

"Well, yeah," I said, "except that's an official town meeting. Cole and I won't talk. He won't get the chance to ask me how the pastry course is going, and I won't have to lie to him about it."

Lily shrugged. "You could just tell him the truth."

"Or I could avoid him forever."

"How's that working out for you so far? Sleeping on floors just so you don’t have to risk seeing his face?"

“Lily! You know how hard it is for me!”

She nodded. “I do. And I’m sorry. But I think you could make things easier if you patched things up with him. I’m not saying you have to marry the guy—”

“He doesn’t like me, Lily!”

“If you say so.”

"I do say so."
